I agree that the abuses that have now come to light with the advent of smartphones are horrendous and WAY too pervasive. There are a significant number of folks who are cops who simply shouldn't be. Better screening and way better training are desperately needed in many jurisdictions.

But I have known and dealt with a large number of police officers who are remarkably fine folks and have remained so, especially given the job they are given to do, which could coarsen anyone. I would put my life in their hands any day, and without hesitation.

The video in this link shows one such officer. My hat is off to him.
 
Everyone knows that suicide by cop works much better if one is a black male. We even have a specific felony called "black male". 😉

I do admire the cops' restraint, and I'm glad none of them died for it.

speaking of which, i miss that guy 🙁 hasn't logged in since 4/8 of last year.

but on the other hand, this cop thread is decidedly less depressing than the ones he usually posted

I think we should acknowledge that there are many more cops who serve the community with honor than those bad apples who are unqualified and incompetent.
 
LMAO, those who think there are more bad cops than good cops are the ones living at home or under a rock. Bad cops get way more media coverage than good cops do so you only see examples of bad cops. As for personal interactions, I guarantee if you're not doing something stupid/illegal or known for doing stupid/illegal things, cops will not hassle you, regardless of race (just throwing that in since that is where this post is going to end up).

Most of us live in a home, whether bought or rented. Do you live in a cardboard box in the street or something that gives you a different perspective? Most normal people realize that most cops are good cops, news only focuses on bad cops and those who have their eyes glued to the tv or internet will only see the bad cops since that is what gets ratings and website clicks.

Now that is supposed to be how it's done. The cop did not want to kill anyone and did everything he possibly could to not kill the guy while being ready and prepared to do so if absolutely necessary.

He could have unloaded on the guy and it would have been a "good shoot".

Outstanding cop in my book, would buy him a drink anytime.

I think the biggest problem most of us have with the good cops, of which there are a bunch no doubt, is that they help cover up blatantly illegal activity of the bad cops. So much so that in the vast majority of the country if a good cop turns in a bad cop their careers are over and their lives are even threatened. So it's rather tough to call a guy, who is otherwise a fine example of what a LEO should be, who stands by and watches another asshole cop do illegal shit and then lies for said asshole a "good cop".
 
You are assuming cops are guilty purely on the fact that they are cops. Fellow cops assume other cops are innocent until proven guilty which is why you seen them defending their coworkers.

Difference of perspective but same principle; if someone told you a family member you knew committed a crime you would probably assume they didn't, be neutral or defend them, not jump on the guilty bandwagon.

There is also something people don't realize, whether a cop is an asshole or not, cops depend on each other with their lives. When you are a cop and is responding to a dangerous scene, the cop backing you up could be a complete asshole but you are trusting him with your life and vice versa. That is why there is a much tighter brotherhood, something most people don't see or understand. Different perspectives.

Like how that one whistle blower cop was left in a situation alone and got shot up? He was the bad cop.

Very true. But covering for corrupt/trigger happy/raging asshole cops by their brethren has to stop. As a PI, what I noticed is that, especially in smaller forces, the chief sets the tone. If the chief is a cowboy, his officers are cowboys. If the chief is service oriented, his officers tend to be, too.
 
I agree, that was admirable restraint! I don't think my non-LEO perspective could have tolerated any of that. Menacing me with a blood crusted knife? Advancing at that range? Um, no. Wish granted.

No tazers in that department? No donuts or bean bags? (no not that donut)
