look into the nomad jukebox line, they are bigger then the ipod but I think the 6 gig(Ipod id 5gig) model goes for about $200+. The jukebox model also support more audio formats and has EAX effects.

we have a mac and a couple of pcs

so that's not so much of a problem

the d-link one looks interesting but like many mac fans looks for them is really important

so the ipod still looks better even though it's less capacity and 100 bucks cheaper

I used my friend's ipod and it had over 1000 songs on it. As far as controls, it was very easy and responsive to learn and access everything from games, to song lists. I didn't even know there was a hard disc inside because it operates so much like a memory mp3 player.

I think you'll be getting long lasting quality for the Ipod but I just saw the price sticker at around $380 which does seem a bit high.

For some user opinions and quick review of some hard drive mp3 players on the market I'd go here. According to them the ipod takes the crown.

Sure, unless you want to buy an Ipod and don't wanna buy a G4 along with it. ;)

You can use iPod with a PC, I do it every day. The software is rather buggy right now, but it does work. I sure as hell wouldn't buy a Macintosh just for iPod use.

As far as comparable products ... any of the plethora of HD-based portable players will work. The problem is, they are larger and uglier than iPod (by far). iPod also has much better battery life, and, not to be missed ... Firewire (1394) transfers. Significantly speedier than USB.

Just get the Rio Volt. Nothing compares to it's cost per MB (ESPECIALLY with WMA).
Let's see, I got 200 700MB CD for FREE after rebate. Can you figure how much storage that is for MP3s? WMAs?
Battery life is good too because it spins down the CD when the rest of the MP3 is loaded into anti-skip memory.
