I think the moderating should continue.

It's annoying as hell to scroll through pages and pages of personal insults with a bunch of nested quotes. If I was a mod I'd just delete these wastes of space-type posts.

Some people in P&N are looking for content and reasonable debate.

The freer use of profanity makes the personal attacks seem much harsher and more offensive, IMO.

There will always be personal attacks, I believe. Let's just make sure the more flagrant offenses are moderated (Mod deleted/edited posts would be my choice, I'm not big on vacations or bans for these type of occasional offences).

And let's encourage the Mods who participate in P&N to try and lead by good example.

As good of an idea that might seem, I have a feeling that an "anything goes" forum catering to banned posters and other freaks would quickly become filled with thinly-veiled links to Lastmeasure, various goatse pics, various sites with embedded 0-day trojans, and other nonsense.

I've always looked at the P&N forum as being a bare knuckles affair. You're going to get hit. That said, I like the idea of backing down from the Marquis of Queensbury rules that run the other forums and allow a more relaxed MMA type debate.

You can't have anarchy... a certain amount of order is necessary to move the debate along... but I don't think you can moderate that particular forum like you would OT or L&R.

I once made an OT thread that 'de-generated' into P&N. The mods moved it and I took it where it hurts.

IMO all swearing should not be tolerated, just like the Pastor said in the other thread. Swearing is not a necessary part of communication. :light:

As for the personal attacks, it's debatable. You can degrade someone pretty good using just basic english and non-swear words. It's sometimes hard to tell if something is actually an attack. That's where we need some skilled mods like DrPizza. 😎

You made a thread about a resort in Cuba, and then baited people by saying you would rather live there than the USA if you had to choose between the 2.

To be honest, I think I would rather be a Communist than live under Bush's rule.

Apparently 99% of what you hear about Cuba here is generated by right-wing extremists in Miami. I guess they have a right to be upset; I'm assuming that they are the former 'Bourgeoisie' of Cuba that had their mansions and such expropriated. That said, they are spreading FUD that is nonsense.

In Cuba I could live with a cleaner conscience than I could in the US.

A few of us tried to lobby to have P&N cleaned up a few years ago, since it always tends to descend into an inferno of flames, but at that time the mods indicated they weren't interested, and they may have been right - it's probably impossible to enforce without gutting the discussion. Too bad.
