I love new gadgets and toys. Using them as much as I can daily just gives me pride in the money I put on the gadgets I buy.

However, I have a dilemma. Recently purchased an Ipad (I'm a college student) I want to take it to my classes to take notes or surf etc etc. Problem here is that I dont want to get any attention or have people ask me what it is or for lack of a better word "judge" me. I'm sure that others who love gadgets have come across the same thing in the work place. I imagine the first Iphone owners had the same problem.

I'm sorry if I haven't explained it too fine but am I the only one feeling this way? I'm reluctant to use my new gadgets out in public because of people possibly judging me.

Why do you care what people think? I think Apple products are for tools, but what's it to you? If you get valuable use out of it, use it. If you don't; why'd you buy it in the first place?

Maybe you shouldn't worry about it and just use the gadgets you purport to love.

btw, i've judged you but won't say how.

But you see the point. Some people, like me, will see you with a $500 iPad trying to type away on a touch screen using a limited program like Pages. And we'll :rolleyes:

Especially when classes may require a bit more than just Pages on an enlarged Ipod Touch. Like you know programs you'll have to install, presentations, papers to write, files to transfer. Someone gives you a USB? Oh wait, you can't do anything with it. Someone gives you a ... I'm going to stop.

So if you really care about what I think, then yea, you will be judged.

If not, then no need to care.

Ok, you send your iPad to me, I'll use it for a month around some people, then I'll ship it back and tell you if I got any weird stares. :D

You'll get bugged a lot I think. Mostly from people who will say "is that an iPad?! Can I see it?" I doubt anybody's going to "judge" you negatively for owning one.

I'm guessing that not caring isn't an option? I've found that if you plug in a pair of headphones while looking not-particularly-friendly, it tends to keep people away. Throw on a hoodie while you are at it.

The general public and your peers probably think you and your shiny Apple/whatever gadgets are super neato, so I would not take the opinions of a computer enthusiast forum to be representative of the "real" world. Just use and enjoy your hardware?

I will judge you. The iPad is just another underfunctional, overpriced piece of apple eye candy. For the same exact price, you could get the touchscreen Lenovo IdeaPad which not only has almost double the computing power, but it also has a full OS instead of a modified phone OS.

Here's the deal. The Egyptians invented the world's best note-taking device about 6000 years ago. It's called paper.

I've tried taking notes electronically and the stupid machine (I've tried several, from tablet PCs to the iPad) keeps getting in my way. Just stick to paper/pencil, you'll even do better in your classes without a distraction box in front of you.

This. Though one up to the laptop, it does keep you more organized. That's why I started taking one to class in university.

The iPad does have its uses in that it does what most people need a computer to do. I know my parents don't need a full desktop or laptop. They just surf the web and send emails, maybe look at some photos or videos. You don't need a full powered system and complicated OS to do that. I think Windows and OS X are going to die out in a few years beyond servers and a minority of power users. Embedded systems and cloud computing are the future whether we like it or not.

If we still used Papyrus, you'd be correct. But the modern world uses paper based on the Chinese invention.

Well in Stargate the Egyptians used Ipads so the Papyrus was on it's way out anyway...

I think the only thing worse than shelling out for an iPad, is doing it and then not losing it.

On the upside, you can probably get a fair amount of male provided felatio by taking it to class

Walk into the Lecture Hall with a really pissed off stance and yell, "It's not a fucking iPad!" Proceed to sit down and no one will bother you.

Only fellow nerds would even give a damn. I'm surprised a lot of people don't actually think the iPad is that "cool", and I'm around the most shallow people on Earth. (I live in SoCal LA Area - pretty much Shallow Central only 2nd to San Francisco)

I guess it's a sign of the times. There are too many gadgets out there and people aren't really that impressed anymore. 5 years ago people probably would of creamed their pants... now things like even the iPad is "old hat". I woudln't worry about people judging you other than making some remark of it being over-priced (in which it is of course)

Now that the iPad is out anyway, it makes people who own expensive netbooks seem like "veteran IT professionals"! :D

Using an iPad to take notes in a college class reminds me of people who ride segways around in a mall. That reminds me, some people were riding on segways while waiting in line to get their iPad.
