If he's looking for a 35mm, I've got a Canon EOS Elan II and love it. I have a friend that has a Nikon N60 and its great too. You might try Focus Camera its pretty good. Never had any problems with them.

Canon EOS user here as well.

I bought mine for the same reason as your friend, for a Photography class. What's nice about this SLR is it's got a good array of auto AS WELL AS Manual functions (GOTTA HAVE the manual functions for the Photo class).

Also, thinking to the future...If and when your friend decides to jump to the digital world, some Canon Digital equip (albeit the higher end stuff) can use lenses from SLRs (like the EOS).

Good luck!

Another vote for Canon EOS. I've had my Elan since 1992 and it's still going strong!

Although you can't go wrong with Nikon either. I have a Nikon digital camera.

How much does your friend want to spend? He can get a Canon EOS that is anywhere from $300 to over $2000 depending on what model he gets.

Contax/Yashika (sp?) is a great brand. I had an old Contax SLR with a Zeiss 55mm lens and a Yashika 220mm telephoto lens, the thing took beautiful photographs. Personally I don't like the newer SLR cameras, too much gadgetry, I'll set the focus and f-stop manually thank you, all a camera needs is a light meter. Unfortunately, Contax are hard to fix if they break, I accidentally tried to advance past the end of a roll of film, and I stripped the film advance gears. No-one around my area will touch the camera because Contax are fairly rare, so eventually I have to get around to sending it to Contax in NY. The thing took great photos though. Nikon is also nice, but you might just be able to find a used Leicia (sp?) for around $300 if you get really lucky, and those are regarded as some of the best cameras money can buy.

EDIT: Contax Camera Website

We use Olympus OMPC. I found that many nature photographers use it for national geographic pictures and other mags. Nice camamra, but I do not know enough to claim its the best. It's served us well though.

Uh, scratch my Contax reccommendation unless you can find a used one. The Contax I used (139 Quartz) originally belonged to my parents and I had no real idea how much it cost. A new, bottom end Contax body (no lens) is ~$650, lenses add another ~$200-$300 at least. Oops. Great camera if you find a used one in good condidtion somewhere. Nikon is a great company, and my "point & shoot" Olympus has been a great camera, I would assume that would transfer up the Olympus model line.

Whatever you do don't buy an APS film camera. The pictures that come out suck! The film is 25mm not 35mm so the resolution is very poor.

As for cameras, I haven't been camera shopping in years but I remember Leica had a pretty inexpensive 35mm camera. Leica and Contax have some of the best lenses out there. I think the Leica lens on the cheap 35mm is plastic though but who knows? Its still a Leica.

Edit: Whoops scratch that. I didn't see SLR. If you want, you may try and get a used Canon A-1 or AE-1. There must be tons of equipment out there for real cheap. Plus, I think its better to learn on a manual camera than an automatic which does all the work for you.
