A fluke accident has people concerned over headphones

Seriously guys, you just can't make this stuff up. A 23 year old Canadian college student was killed when a crashing helicopter struck and dragged him as he was walking to his mailbox. Apparently eyewitnesses noticed that the youth was completely unaware of his impending doom and a friend told reporters that he often listened to music through earbuds underneath the hood of his sweatshirt. Naturally, reaction was swift. If he had not been listening to music perhaps he could have nimbly sidestepped the helicopter and gone about his business as if nothing had happened. After all, this sort of crap happens everyday right?

While I completely agree that listening to music too loudly can inhibit your ability to recognize and react to a potentially dangerous situation around you, I can't help but find it completely baffling that this story sparked a debate about the dangers of headphone use while completely glossing over the fact that this dude was hit by a HELICOPTER.

In fact, no concrete evidence was given that he was even wearing headphones at the time. At any rate, this fiasco has really struck a chord with me. From this day forward I will not wear headphones while traveling on foot just in case a meteor, satellite, or charging rhino should be barreling towards me

Yeah, if he was not wearing headphones, he would have looked around in confusion right before being crushed by the helo.

I'd like to hear the ear buds that could block out the sound of a helo at close range.

does this mean that you can't hear a helicopter directly below it? there's no way an ear-bud headphone can drown out the noise of a heli.

You know, most of the time I'm walking around on campus or even at the gym I'll just have my headphones on but leave my zune off, just so no one bugs me. I should probably mention that I work as a tutor for the university and that most of the time its freshmen running up and asking me to help them with their homework (aka just doing it for them). I'll keep my eyes peeled for downing choppers for now on though 🙂

Yep. A helicopter crashing towards you would be noticeable, no matter how loud your music is. "Doot doot doot doot" WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH BAM

Now they will have to update the warning labels for headphones.

WARNING: Excessive volume levels can lead to hearing damage and/or loss, and may cause your dumb self to ignore a helicopter that is about to lodge itself in your anus.

I think they need to ban helicopters from crashign on people.

It's crazy people like you that are ruining our society. New laws won't solve the problem. We just need parents to better inform their children about the dangers of falling helicopters.

Also, really strong umbrellas.

ROFLCOPTER poast o' the day. I laughed.

I just realised we need to get to the root of the problem. Forget banning crashing helicopters and loud music. We need to ban gravity!

You know, you'd think that would be illegal...you can't just park your helicopter anywhere you want...although on top of teenagers may be OK...depends on your state and local regs.

He probably was one of those people who cranks the volume up such that an entire room can easily hear it. At that rate, by the time he's 50, he wouldn't be able to hear a helicopter anyway.
