Amazon prices are the shops prices essentially. Why would you want to help put a good mechanic out of business? They mark it up in order to put food on their table you know. The price you pay is for convenience. You can always order the part yourself and try to put it on :x
Charging for labor and a reasonable parts markup for carrying inventory (though most shops don't carry much inventory, they call the parts delivery folks) is appropriate. Doubling the price was a bit excessive.
 
Nothing tells me the struts are bad, I can only go by what the shop tells me. That is one thing I have always hated about car places. I can have complete smoke blown up my ass and I would never know the difference.
