A few thoughts on Oblivion

I haven't played Oblivion for a while now, but a question keeps coming up in my head. What more is there to the story besides closing oblivion gates? I played the game for many hours and have closed many oblivion gates. So many in fact that near the end of my 360, I was starting to get annoyed at the repetitive nature of the game. On top of that I got turned into a vampire, which really annoyed me.

The graphics for Oblivion are stunning. It is one of the few games where the world felt alive with people. Sometimes I feel like going back to play it. But for what? To close more oblivion gates?

Well no, after you finish the main storyline the gates kind of all go away...

You would usually just go back maybe to fuck around a bit. Well, that's what I usually do when I'm bored in Oblivion. :)

On the PC you can go crazy installing mods for graphics, content and behavior changes.

On a console, besides Shivering Isles the only things to do when you've completed the main storyline are starting over trying a different build/emphasis (archer, destructive spells vs. summoning, axe vs. longsword, ...) or becoming a mad killer out to depopulate the world.

Well, did you go completely through the main story? There's 3 pretty decent battles towards the end of the game. In fact other than the one battle at the city when the Oblivion gates start showing up I can't think of any significant ones in the story. That and there's also the Arena to go through, some ok battles there.

Yep, they even have mods to correct the horrible leveling system in Oblivion. I believe there are even total conversion community made mods that basically create entirely new games using the engine of Oblivion. Bethesda provides some very good modding tools to the community.

The 4 guilds have their own subplots.

You could always go back and get a copy of Morrowind :) Not as pretty... but a damn good game (playable on 360 via emulation and of course on the PC - and it doesn't take much of a PC).
