A few questions for people with long hair

Leros

Lifer
I started growing my hair about a year ago and I'm realizing I have no idea how to maintain it. Recently, I've started getting a lot of breakage and a lot of hair falling out in the shower.

I just learned today not to brush your hair while wet. Since your wet hair is fragile and prone to stretching or breakage. I went out and bought a big toothed comb for detangling my wet hair. I was surprised to see there are two kinds of combs: detangling and conditioning.

I have really thin blond hair, so I also bought some shampoo and conditioner geared towards blond people that claims to make hair stronger and reduce breakage.

Am I getting this right? Anything else I need to know to reduce falling out and breakage?

Edit: When I say long, my hair about 8-9" inches in the longest places.

Don't wash it too often, thats about all i got.

I know people say to wash every other day, but I wash it daily. Since my hair is really thin and I am really oily it gets stringy and nasty if I don't. I often shower twice a day, but I only shampoo and condition in the morning.

I don't comb mine at all. I hate the look of long combed hair on guys. I part mine roughly with my fingers after I'm done drying off and am done for the day. My hair right now is right between a Flash Gordon and an early Beetle.

I just cut off a year's worth of growth

I washed mine every day and used a wire brush. It was great.

I have hair well past my shoulders (not quite to the nipple) and get a cut 1-2 times a year. I've had long hair for just shy of 20 years. I wear a ponytail 90% of the time.

While I have a totally different hair type from you, I wash mine every day, condition once a week and brush it while wet. When I was younger, the shampoo I used made no difference, but as I age, my hair's a little more prone to splitting, and using high $ shampoos has helped.

As for the hair loss, I obviously can't be sure you're not going bald, but if I lose 10-15 hairs in a shower, it looks like a lot, because it's so long.

My hair is long and naturally curly so what I do really doesn't apply. Wash daily, brush wet, conditioner ever day, hair gel to add weight and remove frizzle. If I can't shower or whatever, wet and tight pony tail.

The hair falling out is just more noticeable because it's longer now. It's normal.
I don't brush mine at all, I just comb it once I'm out of the shower (with a big toothed comb).

Look, people are going to give you some tips on how to maintain your hair. But if you have male pattern baldness you aren't going to beat it by avoiding showers or something ridiculous like that. Think about it, why would 2 showers a day remove specific hairs on your head and not other hairs. If you were damaging your hair in any major way (normal hair is more resilient than you think) then it would fall out evenly until bald. That may be happening, I couldn't exactly assess your entire situation from what you wrote, but it sounds like you have male pattern baldness and your best bet would be to simply get a haircut that builds on your strengths instead of highlighting your weaknesses, part of growing up is accepting you may not always have the exact hairstyle you want.

With that said, I use sukesha products for thinning hair, conditioner and shampoo. Also, a good hair gel can do a lot too, it will take you some practice to not look retarded, but it can reinforce the hair, making it look thicker.

Also, I stopped brushing my hair all together, while you can't stop some things, you might as well not help them along.

Hair right to my nipples. Wash+conditioner every day, sometimes just once on the weekends. Brush after shower. No problems here.

I've been growing mine for about 4 years. I get the ends trimmed at least once per year, more often if I need to. It STILL looks like this after I blow-dry it:

I have so much natural curl & wave in my hair that if I don't, it tends to end up in ringlets...and it's always in a ponytail...or braided, either a single like this:

or in double braids like this:

When it's wet, it's about nipple length.

I generally wash it daily with a good moisturizing shampoo, condition it at least twice/week, and always brush it after my shower, never comb it. (Too much body/tangles for a comb)
