A few questions before I get a Dell laptop

When we got our Dell Dimension system a few years back, we got an actual Win98 disc. Does Dell do that with their laptops? I'd really like to get a WinXP disc instead of a system restore disc.

Also, can we take out miniPCI cards on the laptop? If so, are Dell Latitude miniPCI cards compatible with Inspirons?

How do UXGA screens compare to SXGA other than the higher resolutions? My friend said that on Toshiba laptops, UXGA looks blurry compared to SXGA.

I'm not really sure about the system restore disc, but if thats what they do send out, isn't there still a directory with Cab and setup files so you can do a reformat of the hard disc?

I too am looking at buying a Dell laptop, the C400 to be exact, and I found this site that shows how it is possible to take out a built in wireless mini-pci card out, though it doesn't mention really how changeable or interoperable it is, and it doesn't look like an easy task.

But anyways, here's a bump to your thread.

Thanks for the answers. The reason I ask about the miniPCI is that Dell is selling one for the Inspirons for $110, and in their Software and Peripherals section, I found one for the Latitude series $85. The process of taking out the card sounds a little complicated so I guess I'll spend the extra $25.

Dell has a restore disk for WinME. For Win2K it is the OEM disk from MS. I also got an OEM XP disk for my 4100 this year as a promised upgrade to ME from Dell.

I have an 8100 and it came with an OEM XP CD. Mine has the SXGA screen and it looks great. I hear the UXGA screens are even better.

you unscrew the panel, push on a couple tabs, the card pops out, you pull the wires off, then you do it backwards to put the card back in.


the UXGA screen is blurry in comparison if you run the UXGA screen at the SVGA's native resolution then put them side by side. that will happen with any LCD.
