a few questions about wireless (linksys questions)

i'm finally going the route of wireless, but i have a few question on what kind of setup i should get. right now i'm leaning towards the linksys BEFW11S4
and linksys WUSB11.

i was wondering if anyone has any experience on using either product...i'd like to know about range (how far and how much of a connection loss) and any problems that have occured.

also one more question whats the difference between the linksys BEFW11S4 and the WAP11?

any links to reviews of either product would be most helpful 🙂

I've got the BEFW11S4 and it's been a great experience so far. The speed is quite good to the computer downstairs. I don't use it often, but when setting it up, the speed of pages to load was no different then it being connected directly. My laptop (with internal 802.11b) comes on Monday so I'll have a better, first hand experience then.

I have the BEFW11S4, the range is pretty good, I am using the linksys wireless PCI card in a computer across the house (down a hallway and in another room, about 50' away) and I get a pretty good 60-73% connection speed. The pings from my computer (on the switch) to the computer connected via wireless is around 3ms, which is also pretty good.

I will be getting a laptop with wireless pretty soon and am hoping that it can receive a good connection downstairs, im pretty sure it will.

The only thing that i have had problems with, is that i am using ICS to share my 56k through it, so i am not using the router feature. The host machine is not obtaining an IP from the router, and I cannot seem to be able to enter the router's setup page (by typing its IP into browser) if DHCP isnt enabled.

This isnt a big problem though, and its probably just a problem with my settings.

The WAP11 is just an access point with one cat5 port on it to connect it to a computer or other router, and the BEFW11S4 has the 4 port switch on it, other than that there is not much difference. The price of the BEFW11S4 was actually lower than the WAP11 (best buy rebates) so they seem like they're trying to replace the WAP11 with it.

I have the WUSB11 and it works pretty well. I tested it side by side with a Orinoco USB Gold Client and I'd say that the Orinoco had a little bit better range, but the WUSB11 made up for it because it has a long USB cable and the device is small, so I could put it just about anywhere in the room (hanging from the ceiling, attached to the wall, etc..). For about 1/2 or 1/3 of the price of the Orinoco, I think it's a great value.

I personally won't use any Linksys wireless clients. I had less than stellar performance with them. I use Orinoco USB clients which are recommended by everyone. I also use a Blekin USB model which works almost as well as the Orinoco.

The BEFW11S4 actually outperforms my Netgear MR314 in terms of distance and I like the user interface better. I attached external atennas which can really help your distances if needed.
