i guess my suggestions in this thread are a little late?

nice trip. looks like you could have used some fill flash in a couple of those pics.

If you can't bounce it, consider using a diffuser.

like that one? I typically don't like to point the flash directly at the subject...I like to bounce it instead, but how would he have done it in an instance right there where there is nothing to bounce the flash off of (like as an overhanging tree)?

yeah, that's the one i was thinking of. depending on how far away he was from the subject i don't think bounce or even diffuser might be necessary.
