A few modem questions....Like do all hardware modems have jumpers?

Im having a few problems with a pair of creative blaster modems so im really considering a switch to a more expensive( and for no good reason other than they work better)modems.

First problem i had was when using the said modem, it continues to say that there is no dial-tone detected(yeah, still on dial-up:|). The phone is free and windows phone dialer works as it is; just that the modem says there is no dial tone. I had throughly tested the modem before if it can connect and it did. Just that the modem started acting weird after a few weeks. I could not resolve the issue so i ended up changing the modem to an OEM USR and its working fine as it is. BTW the OS in use is WinME. One strange thing though was the modem was working fine on my home PC(Tbird-AK31)...Go figure

Second problem is with the same model blaster modem. Everytime the user tries to connect(yes hes also still using dial-up), it makes the PC reboot. Ive tried repositioning the modem in all slots and still the same result. As of yet still no solution for this one.

One thing i forgot to mention, both motherboards were based on the 815ep chipset(Asus CUSL-c and an Intel oem board). Are there any issues with this?

Make sure that you have disabled both on board comm ports in your bios, the modem needs to have an IRQ thats not shared. (you really only need to disable one comm port, but if you don't use 'em, disable both).

Have you tried contacting Creative? Are you sure you were/are using a 4 pin (not 2 pin) phone cable between the modem and wall (some modems are really picky, I had one that wouldn't work without a 4 pin cable, even though the wall jack was only 2).

I 'll try to disable the com ports that arent needed; maybe it does the trick.

As for changing the cables, i doubt it would make the difference considering the modem worked with the phone dialler, but didnt if trying to connect. Anyway, thats all water under the bridge since i already replaced the modem already. Thanks for the suggestion just the same.

Most hardware PCI modems do not have any jumpers....

ok...so how do i know a modem is a software or a hardware modem then?

Search the model # on the internet...

If you have a USR (think you mentioned you did), do an ATI4 in HyperTerminal, that will usually give you some more modem info. Either way, go internet first...
