How does one get the title of Conscientious Objector? What does this entail as far as what one must do?

When one is drafted, are they automatically going to be infantrymen? How many actually go into combat?

Lastly, in Vietnam there were clauses that kept college students, etc out of the draft. Would these exceptions exist again if a draft was reinstated?

There is not going to be a draft.
It would be suicide for the GOP and Bush, as thick-headed as he is, knows this.

They draft 'supporters' are merely people trying to get you to support a pullout.

I'm talking about IF Bush won the election in November. He'd have four years to instate a draft, yes?

IIRC a draft can only be enacted by congress.

There is no necessity for a draft. Starting one up just for the hell of it would be ridiculous.

However, when you are drafted you are considered infantry, but given the option to volunteer for other postitions, like in the army you can volunteer for airborne, I believe.

Again, why bother worrying about it? The "rules" would most likely be revised before it was ever re-instated anyway.

The draft bill has never been repealed. It lies dormant. Therefore, Bush can instate it at anytime (I believe..).

You're mis-informed. It will require a bill passed by both houses of congress.

All you have to do is just decide that you can't take another life. Or something like that.

You have to prove that this stances is consistant with the way your life has been lived up until that point as well. For example, if you claim that you can't kill people because you're devoutly religious but you haven't been to a place of worship in years, then they aren't going to believe you.

Is that true? What priveleges does that give you?

I just skimmed the text of the act, ZV is correct. The executive branch has control of the registration system not the actual initiation of a draft.

Edit: Linky with some info

The current draft system will allow you to be deferred until you graduate HS, the end of the current semester, or the end of the current year if you are a senior.

BUT right NOW the republicans have majority of BOTH the house and senate. So if they hold that and Bush wins re-election HE has nothing to lose by bringing it back, as he can't run again.

It would very likely damage the Republicans pretty badly in the next election cycle. They are not that stupid.

Getting prepared to be a coward eh?

If you're called, fight for your country... otherwise, leave it now.

Priveleges? It's an excuse used to leave the army after you sign up.

That would be political suicide for the republican party and they know it. I love this. One Republican Congressman starts being stupid and talking about the draft and everyone gets up in arms. Several Democrats have been talking about it prior to this and nobody says anything. Until just recently, the people calling for the draft have been Democrats. It's a last-ditch effort to instigate more anti-war sentiment.

I thought they just made you a medic or other non-combatant.

And why would he do that? What does he have to gain?

This is the problem with America today, you are all willing to live here and not be opressed like every other country in the world, but you arent willing to serve for it. We have become a nation full of drippy boxes that only think about themselves and whats on television tonight.

You have no idea how well you have it.

IF a draft is reinstated it will be FAR more equitable than it was during Viet Nam. There will be far fewer deferments or exemptions for the rich, college students etc. The general public wouldn't stand for it again.

That said, I don't forsee a draft any time in the near future. Enlistments are sufficient at this time. The only place there may be a shortfall would be in the Reserves and National Guard. People who sign up for those are willing to serve, but not to be torn away from their families for a year or longer multiple times.

One last thing, I don't understand this fear people seem to have. Being in the military for a couple of years isn't the end of the world. Even in a combat situation the chances of beintg killed or wounded are miniscule.
