A few AVI/MPG questions

If you don't a have a needed codec, how can you tell what codec the video requires? Is there a place that has all the usual codecs?

Why can't I fast foward/rewind in some mpg's (in WMP)?

Why do some videos just quit playing half way through (in WMP)? Can I fix it?

What's with this new licensing thing videos are doing now ("wait while we acquire license, press play when play lights up")?
