Storage Wars

I've been watching this show lately. Kind of risky to make a bid on storage locker when the contents are unknown. If you had extra cash to throw would you do this?😛

One show (episode 6) had a guy wining a $750 bid on a locker full with 3000 copies of "old newspapers". Turns out that they were 2 newpaper editions Memphis-Press Scimitar and The Commercial Appeal announcing Elvis Presley death August 17, 1977 valued at $89250.

Another (episode 3) a bidder bought a locker full of restaurant/kitchen equipment for $2600, sold for a profit of $19k all in a days work. Of course some winnings bids resulted to loss of $$$ since the contents were not worth anything.

show looks dumb. unless you're in some area like LA where you may get a forgotten about celeb stash who the fuck is really going to drop money on what is most likely trash.

I like it too, and think this would be a really fun profession if you were independently wealthy and needed something to do with your time.

yea i've been watching, its actually kinda interesting. i know folks piss on it quick but it is interesting to see what they come up with. it isn't quite as fake as american pickers and such.

anyone notice that the wife candi sounds like pam from the office? lol

I like the guys on auction hunters better..

Checked out Auction Kings yet? Another good show and people onmit aren't complete douches.

I know a guy who lost his job last year and has been doing this for almost a year now. He actually makes a pretty decent living at it but it is constant work, consistently getting rid of the stuff is a challenge. He runs a liquidation web site, sells on ebay and Craigs lists, and sets up at flea markets and trade days several times a month.

He's already run across some crazy stuff, one unit he won for $250 had a bunch of boxes, and when he opened them most of them had true garbage in them ??? who puts garbage in boxes in a rental unit? But underneath the boxes of garbage was 5 5gal water bottles full of coins that counted out to just over $1000.

He won another one for $600 which had a couple of nice antique furniture pieces showing and lots of boxes. In the boxes he found a ton of antique glass, crystal and china. He has sold 3/4 of the stuff and has netted $13k+ so far off that one unit.

shit i used to do that. A few times a year the storage places will have a auction. a lot of the times they will open the door and start bidding for the whole thing. i have won a few times and got some good stuff. always able to make aprofit off it too.

trouble is to many started doing it and the prices shot up. this show is not going to help that either. now everyone is going to think they will find a $70k newspaper in it. bah

i won one that had the keys and title to a 65 mustang. the kid was in Iraq and stopped payment. i found the family and sent them a bunch of personal belongings. i was tempted to look for the mustang..heh

I found it interesting for about 5 mins - like most reality-esque shows. These shows remind of talking to a gambler. You'll hear a lot about the winning and not so much about the losing. Of course there wouldn't be a tv show about people losing their asses trying to do that.

I just couldn't get into it.

I saw this and was kinda excited to watch a show on the business between WD, seagate, hitachi, etc

....not that kinda storage lol

That idea sounds more like a one hour special on Nova or the Science Channel. There isn't enough material there for an entire reality show that your average joe could understand.

They aren't making the money the show says they are. He isn't going to sell those newspapers for 90k. The kitchen stuff they were quoting new retail prices, when almost nothing sells new for retail no less used. Dave is a douche to boot. Decent show though, first watched it during the marathon yesterday.

I had a previous job where we stored old records in a rental storage unit. We were required by law to keep the records for 7 years. After 7 years the co. would quit paying rent so we wouldn't have to clean that shit out. It would suck to win/bid on a unit with tons of worthless paper, have to haul it off, and pay a dump fee to get rid of it.

Sorry to burst your bubble and rain on your parade, but.....

Ive been watching this too on and off for a few months. Its about as rigged and fixed as that silly Mexican family car repo show was. Takes all the fun out of it knowing they seed the lockers they win with interesting items so you wont turn the channel. If its not that, then theres the psuedo-drama.

You know the lockers are seeded when 9 out of 10 times they make 11ty billion dollars on each score. Such bullcorn. If anything, stupid shows like this might encourage more locker theft when every two-bit criminal thinks they can also make "a big score...just like on TV maw! And I dont even have to bid!" 🙄

Just wondering how you know it's rigged. I'm not doubting you. I'm just wondering.

I thought it was weird that no one else seems to bid. Just those 4 guys. Sometimes you see a swarm of people there but all they do is stand around and never bid.

I don't know if they are planted. I think they just edit out all the lockers that have nothing.

I think that there other other bidders, but those 4 are the ones featured and shown on what bids they've won. Since most of what they buy is tied up to business like a thrift shop they're more likely in need of stuff to renew their inventory. Sure they can rig what's inside the locker, but all we are shown are the "edited" parts. You can always know who get burned by not making a profit at the end of the episode. Prices of what they won on are always listed like they are new, which I find ridiculous. But who knows, it's just a show to be entertained on.

I spoke at length to a fellow that runs a storage place. He was telling me that most of the units that get sold are full of actual garbage. The reason is that most places offer the first month free, so if you have a great deal of trash to dump, it's cheaper to put it in storage and not pay the rent than take it to the dump.

I caught this on last night and watched a few of em. The Dave guy is definitely an ass, Barry (Barry Weis is his full name 🙄) is a bit suspect not to mention he shows up with a midget with nightvision and stilts, and the married couple the dude needs to grow some balls and not let his wife put em in her purse although she is definitely the smarter of the two.

The odd thing is, as some already said, that the other people in the crowd never bid. Also, it seems a bit odd that it's always the same auctioneer and assistant. My guess is the auctioneer works for A&E and the production crew for the show goes in to these facilities and buys all the defaulted lockers beforehand, then auctions them off with their own auctioneer. That would obviously allow them to go in and plant stuff in some lockers pre-auction to keep the show "exciting," but I'm sure a few of those are legitiment finds. They're ridiculously optimistic on their value of items though.

Haven't seen any of the other shows people mentioned other than American Pickers, which is interesting because of the people they meet and some of the odd stuff they find.
