Update with conclusion:
We're in NC now, en route to NH..thought I'd update you all :)

Unfortunately, the latest pics are on my desktop (packed up in my car), so I won't be able to post them for a while..but a couple of days before we left, someone came by and was willing to adopt her. He had brought a dog with him in his truck, and the two dogs were playing nearly the entire time he was at the house..so I think she'll be happy.

Original posts
Several days ago (evening), a dog showed up at our house and made herself at home on our porch. She's been here for four days now - sleeps on the bench at night..hangs around during the day. If any of us go somewhere, she runs out and greets us at the car when we get back.

Yesterday, another dog came into the yard, and she ran it off..to the gate, then she came back. Seems like she considers this home now -- and we haven't been feeding her either.

My mother talked to the local police officer today (yes, that's singular...lol)..apparently she belongs to some crazy guy who lived down the street -- he disappeared two weeks ago, and police are looking for him (he's wanted for something now..in the past, he used to steal mail from mailboxes..also stole his dad's police cruiser and pulled people over with it..).

I don't trust her too much with the younger kids (there's a 10yo and 13yo here)..but she's a sweet/friendly dog..unfortunately, due to her breed's unpredictability, there's no way I'd be able to keep her.

If she was trained properly, she could be a good family dog no doubt.

Since her former owner was off in the head, I don't think she's been treated too well...she's afraid of hoses (garden hose)..but doesn't mind guns and power tools..weird.

She acts very submissive -- she'll roll over and lay completely on her back, belly/neck up..and just stay there..

Have you thought about taking her to someone who could evaluate her for being safe?

No dog catchers out here..heh..there's only one cop. :p

We could easily bring her to animal control or somewhere like that..we'll probably have to. Sadly, she'll probably be put down.

Maybe a dog trainer or dog discipline specialist could adopt it. You could probably look one up.

We bought food today. :p

I like her, and would consider keeping her..but as I said earlier, I don't really trust her with the younger kids -- and from all the stories I've read about them (pits), I don't think I'd want one around when I have my own family/young kids. If I planned on living by myself until the dog dies of old age, then I'd probably keep her..

Nah...HappyPuppy is just a bitter old man. I bet he'd taste like crap regardless of how you cooked him. When they get that old, they are too tough anyhow..

Why to what part?

From what the cop said, people take pits and basically make them mean/nasty. We can't keep her because we have younger kids in the family, we'll be living with my uncle for a (hopefully short) while after we move (until we get in a house/apartment), and we have a cat..dunno how the dog will do with that.

Think about it -- for the first couple of days, we:

1) Didn't know who she belonged to
2) Didn't want her to stay
3) Didn't know how long she would stay

We were hoping that she would get hungry and go home. It wasn't until today that we found out that her owner had been gone for two weeks.

My ISP allows subscribers to run free classifieds, and I've found homes for three kittens that way. If you're not in a hurry to get rid of her, you might try that, or run an ad in the paper of the closest city.

Good luck, I hope she ends up in a good home. Bless you for taking good care of her in the meantime.

We're hoping to leave Wednesday (FL -> NH). :(

Thanks for the suggestion, though - we might give it a try :)

She's such a nice dog..but I can't bring myself to trust her too much - my uncle has a ~4yo kid..too much to risk.
