Alright, so when I have a 'pain', I take a 'pain reliever', typically either Advil (ibuprofen) or Tylenol (acetaminophen)... honestly, whichever one I've got handy, I'll take. I honestly don't know the difference in what they do, but hey... they both seem to work on my knee pains and the occasional headaches.

My question is this... do you have multiple types of pain relievers to handle different types of pains?

Yup. Advil for muscle pain, Tylenol for headaches, Execdrin for bad headaches.

we keep ibuprofen , acetaminophen and naproxin in the house

my wife generally takes "Exedrin" because she thinks it works better on headaches, and the caffiene probably does help her

i'll take ibuprofen for muscle aches over acetaminophen
and i take naproxin if i think i'll need to take more fairly soon

i only take acetaminophen/Exedrin if i have a mild headache

the recent studies about acetaminophen effects on the liver, even from normal doseage worries me

Excedrin works best for headaches of any kind in my experience (generally taken with a caffeinated drink for extra oomph)

I take Acetaminophen for general ill feeling.

Advil for minor headaches/muscle aches.

I take an Ib or two everyday with my protein shake for joint and muscle pain. I have found that it decreases muscle cramp discomfort while cycling, and prevents my right elbow from nagging me while curling.

I rarely take Pain meds, but when I do I find Aspirin to work most of the time.

Stopped taking aspirin years ago, when it pretty much stopped working for my headaches. Naproxen (Aleve) does nothing for me except make me sleepy when I've taken high doses of it (prescribed by doctor). Tylenol really isn't too effective on them either, unless it has codeine (etc) mixed in with it. ;)

Ibuprofen is my pain killer of choice. Occasionally, if I have a real head splitter, I'll take two IB-200's with two Tylenol-500's. Yeah, they can be killer headaches, but at least they don't happen too often, and they're not migraines.

If your goal is to build muscle, you should skip the pain relievers all together. They stop the muscle from reparing itself after a heavy workout. The repair process is where the growth comes from.

I am not talking about taking them if you are sick.

I first read it in Muscle and Fitness magazine. There is no link for that article.

Here is one link I found.

Different painkillers work differently though.

Aspirin, Advil (Ibuprofen), and naproxin all work by stopping the body from creating the substances that cause inflammation and make nerves more sensitive to pain. Scientists are just not understanding how these things work. Physiology has come a long way in the last decade.

Tylenol isn't an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug).

I have found that a couple extra strength Tylenol is good for reducing fever and that is about it for me. It does nothing for pain. Ibuprofen works wonders if I take a 600mg or larger dose. I try to never take painkillers if at all possble. A couple years ago I kicked my dependence on painkillers, allergy medicine, antacids, and have never felt better. I try to eat healthy and exercise as much as possible.
