a different ms update problem

I can run Microsoft update *manually*, and it works perfectly.
Installs updates - no problems.

The problem is that it never tells me there are updates pending. I have to manually go and see.

Yes, I do have automatic updates switched to update automatically, and I do have the update service running.

Any hints?

You have it set for "Install Updates Automatically"? Or set to "Download Updates and let me choose whether to intall them"?

Yes, Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running.
I don't have it set to install without my knowledge, and it does not attempt to install anything.
I have it set to 'notify me', and I also tried to 'download and notify me',

I have a machine right next to it that gets the updates, and I see them happening there, but this one never does.

I saw an article today in a a magazine that mentioned Windows Installer 4.5 and also Windows Scripting Engine 5.7 updates, but not sure how this issue relates. I guess I could could try updating them if updating them is unlikely to cause a problem.
