Wow, this looks pretty cool :)

SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome was one of the first universities in the country to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in photonics. Because the field is interdisciplinary, the photonics program seeks to provide a broad base of theoretical and lab-based instruction in electronics, optics, and applied physics. The curriculum builds on a strong foundation of math and science to offer hands-on experience with lenses, lasers, modulators, fiber optics, holography, optical communications, image processing, spectroscopy, and optical system design.

Mabey computer engineering can wait...

It sounds like a very interesting program. Highly technical however, if you have strong interests in behavior of light rays with respect to lenses and other reflective/refractive media, you should consider enrolling. Good luck

Hey thats like 5 minutes from my house! I went to their Open House a month or so ago, but to tell you the truth I wasnt terribly impressed. But I keep hearing good things about them.

At this Open House, the guest speaker was a guy from GN Nettest, a sister company to the company I work for (Laser Probe). He had a degree in Photonics, as does my boss. Its very very interesting. I get to play with monochromaters and prisms and huge lasers strong enough to cut cars in half. Its a very interesting and very profitable field.

I didn't even know there was such a program that specialized. Recently I've been pondering computer engineering and physics, but this looks pretty darn cool, I'll look more into it.

Just be careful...you'll be using lasers in the labs that can permanently blind you if you're not wearing the right equipment. It can be dangerous stuff, even for your brain (well, the MATH is the dangerous part for your brain in photonics, but I digress... :D)

Heh. I'll try not to blind myself, I'm sure most students come out of there with 2 good eyes. It'll just take a little precaution.

Anyone else really liking the looks of this? The only drawback of this degree is that so few colleges offer it, and the one I'm looking at will only take me for the last 2 years. Camden County College? Hmmm...
