A decent gaming rig for $1000

Sonikku

I was curious if I could build a faster gaming machine on a grand so before I placed my order I figured I would ask for comments on my current build. I'll be upgrading from a ABIT Socket A mobo with Sempron 2400+ cpu, gig or corsair value ram and 9600XT.

CPU + MOBO Combo = $231 ($20 less)

Total: $1,003.99

A 7800GT would have been about a hundread dollars less, but I want the fastest machine I can get for a grand. All and all I'm a little surprised I was even able to cram a 7800GTX into this budget. I think a A64 Socket 939 needs to hit 2.2 Ghz to hit equilibrium with a 7800GTX to not make a bottleneck, but the Venice line of CPU's should over clock to that easily. One thing I am worried about however is whether or not the Antec made 450 watt PSU will be enough to run the GTX at stock speeds with a full load. I don't think I have any reason to OC a card this fast, I'd just want to get the Venice up to speed. As for RAM, I hear Battlefield 2 likes 2 gigs of ram. But that isn't a issue as I can just move the gig of ram I already have in my current PC over to the new one. How does it look?

I don't think that power supply will work either... They require a high watt psu... I say invest in a seasonic s12 500w or a tagan 480w.

Get a slk3000b with any of the power supplies chosen above.

But, everything looks fine.

AATech Video Card reviews have shown the wattage the cards themselves use, but I don't think they have told what a full PC load uses. Obviously, I'm not paring this Video Card with a FX-55 or anything. Just a 3000+ Venice. So it's just a matter of having a PSU that can run one power hungry card with a less power hungry assortment of parts.

I think the psu you will be fine. maybe i am wrong rice do you have any info to back that up?

Did a check.

400w or 450w with 26 amps +12v rail.
my bad oh well.

I'm just paranoid.

So it will work? That'd certainly be a plus as I don't want to spend any more that this unless it's really necessary.

Unless you are going to overclock that 3000+ I think it will bottleneck your vid card...and I wouldn't trust that PSU with a 7800GTX.

fyi, the 7800 GTX uses less power then the 6800 ultra. and yes, that psu will be perfectly fine.

lol 😛, the PSU is enough...but I don't trust ''just enough'' when it comes to PSU. Better be safe than sorry.

He will be fine the 7800gtx uses less power than the 6800ultra and it wont bottle neck with his 3000+ as long as he oc's at leat to 3500+ speeds.

dont listen

we probably have high standards and won't risk power supplies.
For me
#1 priority is a good power supply.
#2 is good mobo, cpu, and ram.
#3 is video card
#4 is hard drive
#5 is case
#6 is heatsink.

HUH? The power supply there is fine!!

Everything looks real nice....I would go for it.

Did I not outline in my original post that I intend to overclock the 3000+ Venice from 1.8ghz to at least 2.2 Ghz? (2.2ghz is from what I hear the ideal speed for a GTX)

Anyways... How long is the 7800GTX? If it's really long I fear it might cover up the white port that my DVD drive will plug into.

http://images10.newegg.com/productimage/13-123-243-02.JPG

Looking at the black slot where the card goes into, and the two inputs for a CD drive and ATA HDD, does it look as though the 7800 will cover up both ports?
If the 7800GT is shorter then the GTX that might be a contributing factor in me going with that card instead. It would also settle the issue of having a weak PSU.
