A damn Amber Alert scared the living crap out of me.

Just now, an Amber Alert siren scared the crap out of me and my wife from our respective phones at 2:30 AM. Now I'm wide awake.

The target penetration of this thing is amazing. There are instances of everyone pulling out their phone at once in restaurants, airports, and the entire state of CA.

This social engineering is both highly effective and eerily powerful.

Don't people silence their phones during the night? :hmm:

I don't, but I don't get many calls. If someone's calling me after hours, I can be sure it's important because everyone knows better than to call me after hours. I auto-mute all calls that aren't in my contact list, and if it's important, they can leave a message. I've gotten one AmberAlert since I've had a smart phone. I should probably turn it off.

after receiving 2 fake Amber alerts in the middle of the night (with subsequent apologies from the Police Department for the error) I shut them off.

I have only ever received one, and a co-worker in the same city received that alert well after the person was already found, and multiple times, IIRC.

is there an app for that or something?

Why would you keep your phone/volume on at night anyway. This is all the more reason to turn it off.

Surprised you would get that shit all the way across the country. Unless the guy is flying air force one, he won't be in CA any time soon. But as already stated - turn that shit off.

I think they changed the notification level as I remember getting a few on my older phones and it wasn't shocking. Got a special weather alert or something the other night and it sounded like my phone was warning me about the end of the world. Thankfully before I'd gone to bed, I'd only have to assumne they accept the notification 'sleep' setting.

If someone's calling me after hours, I can be sure it's a wrong number. 😀 That's why I always silence my phone.

Huh... :hmm: Pretty sure I've never done anything to turn it off but I've never gotten an alert.

So you have APPathy installed? It automatically detects how many fucks you give about the outside world and disables notifications accordingly.

Ha. The same happened to me! I had fallen asleep for 13 hours and counting. I'm not really feeling well. Anyway, I was sleeping and got woken up!

Do they expect people to roll out of bed and search the streets by torchlight at 2:30AM for the missing kid? No? Well what they got instead was a bunch of people waking up pissed off and figuring out how to disable the alert on their phone. So much for amber alerts.
