If someone's calling me after hours, I can be sure it's a wrong number. :D That's why I always silence my phone.

KT

Amber Alerts make noise even if your phone is on silent. Mine was the first to go off in a meeting once, about 3 seconds later everyone's phone was going off.

Wow, really? Yeah, I would be disabling that nonsense right away.

Just this week we got a robocall from a lost pet alert service. A neighbor misplaced their dog and I guess paid a pet alert company to bother us.

And you probably did a fist pump in your head and thought, "Yes!!! First!!!"

I left mine enabled, just in case. They happen so infrequently and if it helps to find the kid, I'll deal with the inconvenience.

More like "My wife and I pay Verizon $130/mo, but I'll be damned if I don't know everything first!"

Generally speaking, this seems to be a really polarizing subject. People pissed that their phones are going off due to an Amber Alert... others calling the first group selfish.

Look, it's 2am. Either I'm asleep and don't know where the fucking kid is, or I have the fucking kid. In either case, leave me alone.

Yea, AA I can maybe understand.

But I got a series of 3-5 severe weather alerts in same 'THE WORLD IS ENDING' fashion for a typical business-as-usual for the incoming mediocre snow storm.

I shut those off as soon as I found out about them. There is a 0% chance of me recognizing some kid I saw x time ago. I can barely find someone I know in a room of people.

Nothing's better than waking up at two in the morning to someone asking you if Fred is there. Mine is always silenced.

I had to turn those off. Every monsoon season my phone would go apeshit with flashflood warnings.

Where is that setting? I want to see if we have anything similar here.

For Android on Verizon (HTC One M8) there's an app pre-installed for it called Emergency Alerts. T-Mobile looks like it's the same way. I believe Sprint buries theirs in your default messaging app's settings.

Heh - maybe Obama will use the Presidential Alert to broadcast an appropriate send-off message on his last day in office. iOS doesn't have that setting, just Amber Alerts and Emergency Alerts.

Actually, each state has its own alert system, and national coordination takes place through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a private nonprofit, untouched by the federal stalemate.

In other words, Barry would have to call in 51 favors to pull this off.
