A coworker wrote me a hot check for an external harddrive

Who has the drive? If you have it, just tell him you're going to hold on to it until he's got cash for it.

If he has it, tell him you want cash... no more checks. If he has the money in a checking account, tell him to write a check to himself and go cash it.

Either way, tell him he owes you $15 more for the fees you were charged on account of his dumb ass.

Most importantly, you don't give a crap if he's well-liked or not. It doesn't change the fact that the dude clearly sucks with money and owes you $15 because of his piss poor money management skills. If he's pulling this crap, then I kind of doubt that this is a professional level job... and it really doesn't matter what people think of you in this type of job.

Tell him you'd be glad to hold onto the drive for him until he can pay you.

He has the drive. After all, he paid me with a check, and you can trust your coworkers, right???

Man I'm pissed!

Option 1 : Staple his scrotum to his fore head .

Option 2 : Get drive back .

Option 3 : Wait for and get money , learn life lesson and move on .

Tack on a 29.00 bounced check fee. And remind him every single time you see him that he's a deadbeat. My guess is... you'll never see the money.

Where do you work that both of you are within the cost of a hard drive from overdrawing your accounts, yet you're still buying hard drives? McDonalds?

Not to be pedantic, but doesn't a "hot check" mean that it's stolen?

No, when you write a hot check, you have written a check for money that is not in your account.

call the cops?
writing blank check is illegal.

call the cops. or threaten to do so. this guy is just going to lead you on until you threaten him enough that he gets scared and pays up.

or tell him you'll go to payroll and have them deposit the appropriate portion of his paycheck into your account. that may get too political though.

try to scare him off anyhow. he doesn't sound like he's going to produce the dough no matter what he says.
