Nice picture of the Palladin. (Edit: you changed it from the Palladin to MLRS, good stuff those are bad mofo's!) I spent quite a lot of time at Ft. Sill for FAOBC, FAOAC, and the MLRS conversion course. Lawton is such a hell hole I hated that place.

This big boy was my favorite!

Ah, the good old days! MLRS was good stuff, but the 8 inch was a lot more fun IMO.

HA HA, I just read the specs on it. They quoted the top speed at 40-45 MPH. What a joke, we couldn't ever get them past 20 miles an hour, and it felt like you were going 100.

Just remembered sitting on a hill on the west range looking up at Signal Mountain calling in Fire Missions wishing I could target the block house on top of Signal Mountain.

The 8 inch howitzer was indeed mighty, but a maintenance nightmare. You would be far more comfortable in the Paladin. :) I remember replacing about half the PACs in the old 8 inch every time we went to Graf.. :Q

The old blockhouse still stands... :)

I was in a m109 unit for a couple of years. They were more comfortable and faster, but they just didn't go boom as big as the old 8 inch.

We used to blow hydraulic hoses like crazy in those 8 inch units, especially when using white bag.

I forget what "pac" stood for, but it's the military term for engine.

What would you normally use instead of white bag?

White bag is much hotter and faster burning. It gave greater range but was harder on equipment, especially the hydraullic lines and equillabrator. Displacement was unbelievable in those 8 inch howitzers, the spade would move back a couple of feet after shooting several dozen rounds of white bag.

New question about white bag... about how much more range does it give you, in percentages?

Hey, if you are going to mention them in passing like that... you could at least explain, rather than tantalize

Depends on the quandrant or angle of the tube, but going from memory it was like 30% or so.

We had those RAP (rocket assisted projectiles) with the m109 which are 155mm, but I don't think they were ever developed for the 8 inch. When we decomissioned our guns in 1994, we were still shooting ammo from the late 60's. It had the production date on the projectiles.
