a couple problems (win xp)

i have a couple bad bugs i'm trying to get solutions for here - i've already run several different AV scanners and removed a few viruses but these things continue to haunt me -
first - when i boot up and my desktop appears there is a long interval where i can open folders and look at files but programs wont load .. and My Computer gives the flashlight icon.. then 3 or 4 minutes later everything returns to normal.. task manager does run at the beginning but it doesnt show anything abnormal.. nothing hogging the CPU..
and secondly - after usin my system for a little while 10 minutes to an hour things refuse to load - things like task manager and device manager will begin to load but freeze before they appear..
also when i type on my ps/2 kb winamp skips a little... :-(

i really really don't want to do a full clean install of windows.. i did the repair install thing yesterday and that helped a little..

any ideas would be greatly appreciated..!!!

thanks!!

When you go into My Computer it polls all the attached drives...

If you have multiple mapped network drives, you might want to disconnect them temporarily. Sometimes it will wait on a network response before appearing.

I have seen this happen when a bad CD/DVD/Floppy is in a drive - or one that has a diseased autorun. Try temporarily disabling your CD/DVD devices in your device manager, reboot, and see what happens. If disabling them fixes the problem, it could be the sign of an injured drive.

On a sad note, it is possible your HD is having trouble...does it randomly hard lock up (no Ctrl-Alt-Del)occasionally? Or do you see random file missing errors?

gee.. i hope it's not one of my drives.. :-\
what do you mean exactly by (no ctrl+alt+del) ??
here's what's ni my startup tab -
NvCpl (RUNDLL32.exe)
nwiz (nwiz.exe /install)
DeltTray (my sound card mixer)
NeroCheck (something nero related)
NvMcTray (RUNDLL32.exe)
winampa (winamp agent)
Logi_MwX (my new mouse)
dumprep 0 -k (uhh.. something BSOD related i guess)
avgcc32 (AVG antivirus)
ctfmon (dunno - M$ related)
Adobe Gamma Loader (adobe - not sure what though)
Logitech Desktop Messenger (mouse related)

plus realsched which i've disabled while tryin to fix the startup lag prob..
the logitech things werent there when the prob started..

thanks for the attention.. 🙂

i just found something - in my compter's event log i see that it's trying to start a bunch of drivers for things like the parallel port, but i have my ports disabled in BIOS...
what should i do? turn them on adn let windows detect them? then can i just turn em off in the BIOS again??
thsi may be the lagging problem..!!
i fixed the4 other thing it appears - i ran more virus scanners and it found the same viruses i thought were gone.. but now i'm not getting the symptoms..
all that's left is the lag at boot time and a bit of sound skipping when i type on my ps/2 kb.. :-o
