I understand exactly what you want but my rack is at my friends house. I'd be more than happy to help you otherwise.

For example, my rack is a Chatsworth standard, here are all their dimension specs:
http://www.chatsworth.com/CPICatalog/section1/pg9.asp

Heres the problem, I don't have a rack here to compare with. I have 1 3U case so far to pull the dimensions off of, which come out to:

18.00 inches from the center of the hole on the left to the center of the hole on the right
16.75 as the exact width of the case w/o brackets

going by that pic, the measurements are not right?

I measured mine with a tape measure (within 1/8", I won't claim to be super precise), and got 17 5/8" inside distance (case width) and 18 1/4" screw center to screw center. Manufacturer's spec was 17 3/4" inside and 18.31" screw center to screw center, which is within precision of my measurements. Trust the manufacturer's measurements on this one, I think.

The 16 3/4" case width is fine. It's common for devices to be a bit narrower so that if the rack is for some reason a little narrow you don't have to shoehorn them in. Besides, the weight is supposed to be suspended by bolts into the holes. 18" even could be bad... I can see 18" even from inside edge to inside edge, but center to center there's a big enough discrepency that things aren't going to align. That's odd, because 19" racks' dimensions are well standardized. Are you sure you have the correct brackets for the case you've got?
