A couple of questions......weird setup problems.

I have been trying to upgrade a socket 7 setup with an SiS540 chipset. It has built in audio/lan/video. It was going thru a harddrive upgrade from an IBM 3gb to a Maxtor 40gb. That was it.
The drive was fdisk'ed, formatted and Win98SE installed at the owners request. Everything was going fine until the video drivers were installed. After the installation off of the setup CD, and a restart...windows would not complete it's loading process. It goes thru the Win98 splash screen and then nothing. Just a blank screen. The CD-ROM spools up a couple of times but nothing else happens.
I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and a BSOD comes up stating that the system is busy and 'hit any key to return to windows', which we know only works once in a blue moon. It does this after repeated restarts. None of the other device drivers have been loaded onto the system. The LAN, modem and sound drivers have not been loaded.

The motherboard is a M586LMR with a SiS540 chipset. I have no idea who made this, unless LMR is in fact the manufacturer. Other than that, the boards maker is a mystery to me.
I can't get around this one. If anyone has any suggestion, please tell me!!

Actually there are a number of things you could try.

I do not use or profess to know the equipment stated but it sounds like a driver issue

so:
make sure cables are installed correctly and all jumpers correspond ie: slave master etc...

fdisk/mbr three times .

reformat the hard drive

make sure video drivers are good as sometimes a little older driver works better then update if necessary

sometimes windows is extremely fussy about going on a new drive so i usually format /fdisk 2 times

check for a bios update for motherboard if necessary

try moving pci cards (last resort)

MAKE sure all ram and cards are seated properly all cables pushed in etc... me i unplug then replug(better
idea what fits and what doesnt).

check for info on web about known bugs that may cause some equipment not to work together.

but all said i would bet its either vid drivers OR format didnt include fdisk/mbr 3 times

i am no guru but these seem to work when lock ups occur and are the easiest fix also since i started fdisk/mbr i have found my troubles reduced 95%

one last point check bios and ensure all items are as they should be(not your comp)as people tend to experiment with different settings lol

hope these help

Well, I guess I should have mentioned that I have only tried installing one the one drive without slaving it to the Maxtor drive. It all goes beserk when I install the video drivers. The puter was fine until the new drive was put in. Winblows was working fine until that. No such problems.

**New problem**

The old IBM drive was left untouched so that it could serve as a backup in case the shizzitt thit the fan. The shizzit has hit the fan.

Anyway, I hooked up the old drive, boot up and it said no data and reported 39k megs????????????
Somethin is seriously toasted here.
