A cool concept I just thought up

I just thought that instead of using tombstones we could use trees instead. It'd be a really better memorial, because as the years go by after the person's death their tree will grow. Personally I'd like to be remembered as that guy with that big tree that is pretty in the springtime. It'll last forever.

For some reason, when you said "graveyards->parks", I was thinking you were going to mention removing the tombstone and allow cars to park over burial plots. 😛

What I would like to know is why don't we bury people vertically since that would save a ton of room also.

Hell we can save even more room by just cremating people and spreading their ashes in with the tree.

laid to rest

I prefer standing so I am ready to shiv Satan so I can take his place.

In many locations, people are interned inside of two containers - first the normal casket/coffin, and a larger (usually concrete) 'vault', which is usually sealed.

In the future cremation will be mandated and the ashes stuffed into the stomachs of deceased feral kittens.

been done already.

this company plants an oak for an entire family, with their bodies buried around the roots. hell expensive, though. I think some 300k+ for the family oak and plot

this is also happening, but it is not the norm. either way, burials are just plain stupid. Cremation is the way to go.

I thought of setting up jungle gyms right on top of tombstones and letting kids play there

I'm guessing it help's with the illusion that the corpse is sleeping or "at rest" in a comfortable position.

If you leave a corpse standing, it'd probably feel as if the thing is about to walk out. Personally, if they were to bury me vertically, I'd just take the cremation.

In Frank Herbert's later Dune books, they would bury Reverend Mothers vertically then plant a tree above them. Seems to the combine the op's idea and yours.
