A complaint about dell!!!

Mods-If this appropriate- please let me know- Apologies in Advance..

Well I ordered a new laptop, last thursday, from dell.
Went all out- spent $2500 on it
-p3 850/cdrw/14.1/32m video,etc

Even paid for overnight(sadly they do not have faster shipping)[hmm...where are all those transporters from startrek]

Anyway, they now tell me its going to be at least another week, as supposedly it is being hold up by the built in nic card- they dont have any of that part now....

I have called my salesperson several times, do see if they can expedite it somehow.. To No Avail

So this thread is for 2 reasons:

1.To Complain about this lousy situation
2.And to find out if anyone has any suggestions on how to speed this process up.

--Please reply with any suggestions if u have, I thought about getting the laptop from somewhere else but no one has a 32m video card in there laptop.

my company just ordered an inspiron 4000 from dell and we got it in 3 days, not too bad, although getting replacement lapotpl parts from them takes days. It too a week and a half to get a new HDD for one laptop we have under warranty.

At the very least I would imagine you can get your overnight shipping refunded, and I've heard of a lot of people getting well compensated by additional hardware or some other "hook up" because of a problem, best bet is to speak to your sales rep or a customer service person I think.

That's the thing with Dell. They don't have anything prebuilt. Every computer is built to order. Sometimes things like that happened.

YEs, if you talk to a sales rep, you'll get some of your money back on Shipping. If you don't, talk to someone else. They are very customer oriented.

Not to flame, but I can't believe you are upset that they can't ship it to you in under a week. Many of the big manufacturers take 6 weeks or more to ship a computer out.

The only legitimate complaint would be if they didn't let you know this until days later, after you expected to have already received it. If that's the case, they were wrong.

Good luck.

On top of this.. I spoke to them yesterday about the ship date, and they told me that it would ship on 2/23
I call today to confirm, and now it will ship on 3/5..
Damn thats almost another wk and a half...

And the supposed part thats holding it up, is the built in nic.

Hmm... I wonder if i can order that separate down the road?

Why don't you tell them to ship it without the NIC, and have them send it when it comes in. But I have no idea how it would be to install on your own.

Obviously, you went with Dell for a reason. I bet if you could find a better deal, you'd cancel that order and grab another.

I'm sure they won't do that. I looked into getting a refurb from them which had only 8mb of memory but could be expanded to 16, and they wouldn't sell me the memory expansion.

Like most notebook makers, Dell doesn't like you opening the case of the notebook except in the hard drive and memory expansion spaces. I guess they probably have so many idiots screwing things up, that they just don't want to deal with it.

Put one in yourself if its a choice.
Otherwise there is nothing you can do.
If the part is out, the part if out of stock.
Have to wait it out.
🙁
sucks!

stop complaining... if u want 100% perfect service from every place you spend your money wake up cuz u're in dreamland...

i bet that same system would have cost you $400 more at gateway and used lower quality components...

there's no way to speed the process up unless u want to drive the truck/boat taking the NICs to the factory...

It could be worse, my ThinkPad took five months and five days to get to me. Of course I'm quite satisfied that it was worth the wait. I wound up with about $800 off the price of the computer and a free digital camera that was a promotional deal offered between the time I ordered and the time I recieved the computer. Sheesh, I waited three months to start complaining to IBM, normal turn around time is three weeks, one week is nothing to be upset about. What does overnight shipping have to do with anything? All that means is once they build your system you will recieve it the next day, it does not mean that you will get it the day after you place the order. Companies like IBM and Dell do not keep a large stock of systems, especially of high end systems as high end computers do not sell as many units as the more midrange computers. Your laptop will come eventually and I have no doubt that once you get it you will find it worth the wait.

<<Why don't you tell them to ship it without the NIC>>

Probably because you didn't read the post. 🙂

<<supposedly it is being hold up by the built in nic card->>

<<<<supposedly it is being hold up by the built in nic card->>>>

Actually, built in laptop NICs are mini-PCI cards that are user accessable/replacable. It would be possible for Dell to ship a system without the mini-PCI NIC and have the user install the NIC at a later date. However that would be a lot of trouble and is not worth it if network connectivity is a must-have.

Not a flame, but not entirely true.

Dell tech had my mom open her laptop up and diagnose it herself. They told her to take it apart. I dont think we are ever paying for on site tech support again. I have alot of complaints against dell, mainly that 3 out of 7 computers we bought from them had blue screens of death on the first start up. They claimed to fix my moms laptop 3 times and it still does not turn on right. (They wont listen to her in her claim that it is the power switch, each time it is something new) We originally paid for one dimm of 128M ram. We get two. Its $100 difference. Now they wont reimburse us because they are claiming it cant run on one sdram module, it has to have two.

They need to get their tech support together.

Oh yeah, one computer took over 2 months to get to us because they did not have the processor. Go fig. But then again, we have gotten one in 3days flat from time of order.

I was actually hired for Dell tech support and was scheduled to have started work on the 19th of February.

However, due to their cutbacks...... they laid off 1,700 last week here in Austin..... I never started the job.

We use Dell Inspirons at my new job. They are good laptops, for the most part.

I don't think they're perfect, and I won't defend them against individual complaints.

But the bottom line is, they're a heck of a lot better than most companies out there.

FWIW my i8000 is sweet. 😛

Ask the sales slut to refund the overnight shipping you paid and ship ot for free. They should have NO problem with that request.

I didn't read this entire thread, just your first post.

The Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop with those specs is WELL worth waiting for. Dell makes everything built to order, give them a chance.

I'm not defending them, BUT I ordered a replacement HD from Dell on Thursday at 3PM and recieved it on Friday at 11:00 AM. I don't think I could have asked for better service. It was also a 10Gig drive and it was replaced with a 20 Gig. 🙂
