A comment about "Repost" and "search"

Just this morning I had a thread locked as a repost. It was news of a second arrest of person, thsi time a drive-by shooting of kids who may have thrown a snowball at their child.

I'm not offended, mad or put out. However, before posting I did take the time to use the search feature of this board to look-up key words such as "snow", "snowball", "shoot", "shooting"and "fight." The thread to which I must have made a repost to did not appear in any of these searches.

Can the search go deeper than just the topic? If so, I'll use that method instead of the basic clicking of the "search" link.

And BTW, where is that topic to which I reposted?

thanks.

yeah. if the moderators lock a thread for it being a repost, they can at least post a link to the original. Thanks.

Here's the original.

FWIW- it would help if people were less cryptic in their thread titling. I found the orig thread by doing an advanced search for "snowball" in "title or body".

EDIT- yeah, what jzero said. ;)

Also, 12 hours is a lifetime on these forums.

Chances are, if the story is 12 hours old, it has already turned into a flame-fast on this forum. :D

He's like that in person too...it's kinda creepy. :p

Look at YOUR title..."What is wrong with this world?"

You need to practice what you preach - don't go blaming others for your own haphazardness.

lol, funny.

The repost Nazi's are pretty annoying I'll say that much. If you have read it before, move on. :/

Amen to that. I rarely start my own posts, but when I do, I do try and take the time to search for the more obvious keywords associated with that subject. I decided not to renew my subscription to the forums so I don't have the luxury of doing a full-text search. Plus, given the EXTREMELY busy activity in this forum you'd still probably get enough unrelated threads that just happened to have those keywords in it anyway - making the act of putting up a simple post suddenly take 3 times longer while you spend all that time researching to make sure it's not a dreaded repost where you'll be shunned by geek society. And since this place is so busy, short of news stories and current events, most subjects have already been covered at least a dozen times anyway so reposts are pretty much a foregone conclusion.

ouch!
But I can blame others; I can even sue them for mental duress, [my own] lack of coolness and having weird looking avatars that prevent me from getting 10 hours of sleep each night! So there! Pthththhthhhtptpththpththtppp!
:p

What I really want out of this topic is knowledge of the search feature. Can it go deeper than just titles? If not, then my own future threads will be adjusted with this limitation in mind.

Edit: I know now that the subscription-based forum addition does have the capability of full-text search. But since I'm unemployed and my benefits just ran out, food is more important than having an occasional thread being locked...

I think that it is far more annoying to have multiple threads on the same topic than to see a the repost police swarm in like flies on sh1t.

When I see repost, I know not to respond to the reposted thread... instead I will go find the original and post there. Think about it, the repost police may seem like neffers BUT they help the forum self-regulate itself.

Use "Advanced Search" and select "Title and Body" - there ya go.
