A+ certification

Just get an A+ study book. One certified by CompTIA. They can be had for about $50. They usually come with a CD too which has tests on both software and hardware. Barnes & Noble or Amazon.com.

BTW- if you already have basic hardware skills, skip the A+ You may want to take the Network+ test though, that helped me prepare for my MCSE.

A+ is garbage man. I doubt it will help you advance in your career. The biggest point of advancement in terms of monetary and personal status was completing my CCIE.

Actually an A+ Cert will help you get your foot in the door. It might be a good idea to just get that and secure a low lwvwl job just to see if you want to continue a career in the Tech Field instead of wasting your time and money just to find out it's not really what you want to do for a career. If you like it them you can contnue your education to advance.

Exactly. And that's just one more thing to be able to put on a resume, and any little thing helps. A+, Network+, Security+, MCSE, CNI, CCIE... everything.

I beg to differ. Here in NYC, an A+ will maybe and I mean it strictly- WIll get you a job at Bestbuy or CompUSA. If the poster wants to settle for a sub $10/hr job, so be it.

Read his post again. He said it's good for an introduction to the Tech field, not an all-access written invitation.

I am only 15 years old that is why I am not so interested in taking the A+ cert test, but I would like to go through what it covers and learn something new.

It's good you are starting out a young age. If you want to learn something interesting- get into the networking end of things.

Then the BEST thing would be to pick up a CompTIA certified study book. Great for reference or studying. Generally very basic.

Edit: and as gscone said, the networking aspect is pretty interesting as well.

Your negativity isn't helping him get a job. Typical cert-hating crap that's always spewed in certification threads. He isn't asking to take over R&D at intel. At the least an A+ will do nothing, and at the most it will help a little, so what's the problem?

Thanks for the tips guys. The reason I posted asking for online thing was I didn't want to go out and buy a book as I am still saving up for my rig. If the book is good though I may pick it up.

A+ I refuse to take that crap. I can rip apart and put back together a computer in 5 minutes........ if the job I'm applying to requires that cert, its too much of a low end job for me 🙂

Go MCSA or MSCE, hell, even MCP. Get your CCISP and you're golden.

So can most Chimps if they've done it enough. Diagnosing a problem is a whole different situation.

GsCone you must start out somewhere. At one point in your life u were in the same situation and not "all knowing" as you are now. I recommend the A+ to someone starting out it will teach the basics and allow him to get a foundation.

at your age get all the certs you can. (I didn't know you were only 15 on my first reply).

Google is your friend. The books are spendy, but still your age is in your favor so buy what you can. It will all be a good investment in your future.

I got my A+ back in 2001. It was extremely simple since I had been working with hardware/software for a long time. I was able to walk in and pass without studying. Not everyone is so lucky, but if you do well on the practice exams, give it a try. I just like having more certs to add to my resume.

My brother got his A+ Certification at the same time I got mine back in 1997. He was 14 at the time. I was 24. The A+ helped him out getting a job at the computer labs as well as being a student computer network admin later on. He is in college now working for resident network support as a supervisor. The A+ will definetly factor in when it comes to getting a job in college or in high school. It is a good starting point.

At the time when I took it, I already had my bachleors degree so it wasn't that much of a factor at all. It only took me a day to study for it because I did so well on the practice tests. Did it forward my career at all? Nope, but I was glad to have it.

In short, nothing replaces having a good college degree in a computer field to augment your experience and certifications. Especially later in life. 🙂
