A care package for a soldier in Iraq.

I want to put together a care package for him and a bunch of are going to pitch-in and send him some things. Since he is on the ground, I thought some really good body armor would be a nice addition to his jacket armor they have issued him. Thanks for Underground727, for setting me straight about body armor.

And what else would you send to a soldier there?

Our list, so far:
* Toilet paper
* Halloween candy
* handwritten/typed letters/cards/notes
* pictures drawn by kids at a local elementary school
* coupons from local restaurants for free dinners, beer, etc. (now he has to come back!)
* football (with needle and pump)
* Soccer ball
* some "air freshner" type of stuff for the gear he has to wear everyday (like odor eaters)
* gell soles for the boots

We've thought about a mini-DVD player because I now have the ability to burn DVDs at home. That way his wife and others can send him DVDs of hollywood and home movies.

If he needs equipement, what about night vision goggles? Field binoculars? I can't imagine every soldier night vision...

CR, going to turn this into a pissing match or help the guy?

if anyone is thinking of sending a loved one, friend, or just someone from your hometown/city you need to look at the mailing schedule put up by the DoD for those wanting to send Christmas packages.

Check some Japanese sites. They've got some amazing stuff. Like these animals you can control and ride in and then someone says something and they go together and form this big thing with a sword that can beat anything. :Q

A friend of mine in Austin is doing the same for a friend of his, who is also over there.
His friend writes a blog and has provided some first hand accounts of what it means to him to be there.

Shouldn't some of the billions of dollars spent on the war go to.. I dont know.. outfitting our troops?

Yes. Too bad that lunk head Kerry voted against it!

What difference does it make? The bill still passed.

Edit: If you're sending toilet paper halfway around the world, you might as well go all out and get Kleenex Cottonelle. His butt will thank you, and it lasts a really long time compared to other toilet papers.

I could've sworn the election was over.

I'm not even sure you can buy military-grade body armor as a regular civilian.

You can buy better-than-military-grade as a Civilian. The military doesn't use much in the way of body armor - only ultra-uber-l33t-special-forces dudes get anything above a flak jacket. Why? Because most body armor isn't worth a crap versus rifle shells, and that which is has three characteristics:
#1: It's expensive
#2: It's heavy
#3: It's bulky

I don't think we're encountering many 9mm's in Iraq - mostly 7.62mm rifle shots.

Body armor for your personal military.

My national guard unit was just activated, and we were issued Intercepter vests(they will stop 7.62 if you put the SAPI plate in)

Exactly. Regular vest + Trauma plate insert = a lot more defense against armour. However, it's not going to stop anything that it's not covering.

60 Minutes had a great story last Sunday about how under-equipped the troops are in Iraq. They're using plywood and sandbags to try and add some protection to their un-armored Humvees. They've had their friends/family in the US buy them radios (at Best Buy), nightvision goggles, body armor, etc. The interview with the General in charge of the unit was sadly disturbing, he had no good answers for why the troops were so under-equipped. John McCain had some great sound bites about where the defense department budget really goes.

1 vote for MRE's, course he may kill you when he gets back.

We's sent my nephew a bunch of crap, his favorite was a watch with an electronic compass built in, and a Gameboy with lots & lots of AA batteries😉
