turn left and brake hard, probibly do a nice little 180. that way even if i crash into him it will be on the empty passenger's side. and once i'm on the other side of the road any car behind him will hit the back of my car keeping me the safest.

So is it go to the left, or do the right?

turn to the left... into the other lane while braking hard, by doing this i'd probibly end up doing a 180 or close to it.

You'd think that...but what if he is passing someone or avoiding something in his lane, and is planning on getting back in his lane?

Hard right + brake + horn.

I'm usually aware enough of my surroundings to know whether or not someone's within swerving range of my car, so I'd be able to react as well as I could.

But other than that, well, at least I won't be at fault, and I've got a 5-star front impact rating.

Realise that this was my chance to make it look like an accident and hold my course. 😛

OK, instincts would probably take over and I'd downshift while braking and swerving right and putting my car as far right as possible without going into a ditch or hitting a telephone pole.

true but on most of the two lane roads i travel on turning right would mean going headfirst into a nice big oak tree. although who knows if i had a passenger i'd most definatly turn right.

Turning left seems exceptionally foolish. There's a good chance the other guy will realize he's in the wrong lane, so he'll veer right to get back into his lane. If you decide to go left, you are in for a collision.

Pray. No matter what you do lady luck is in control.

Veer Left - You are lucky if the guy does not try to correct and you do not hit any other cars.
Veer Right - You are lucky if the guy corrects and you do not hit any other cars
Brake Hard - You are lucky if the guy corrects and no one slams into you
Slam on the Gas - I am not sure what this will do. If you have 1.3 seconds, unless your car has a sh!tload of power and a professional trans, your car wouldn't react fast enough.

what's with the stupid hypothetical questions?

I read this in an ad for a driving school and realized I didn't know the answer.

What's so stupid about it? Everyone is giving me a different answer... so what is it then?

Dive for the ditch on the right, braking until you hit the gravel (dirt, mud, grass, whatever) then let up on the brake to keep the back end where it belongs, merge back on the pavement when you can. Save the cussing for later. I've been there more than once.

a good reaction would be to stop and veer right.

a neutral reaction would be to brake and stay in lane.

a bad reaction would be to assume the other driver is playing a daring game of chicken.

Much as I love a nice crisp heel-and-toe, I don't think it would be helpful here; in fact the slight disruption to car stability would probably reduce your steering effectiveness slightly.

Swerve right. I don't have a habit of using the horn so I'd just be doing it silently, and hope the other car doesn't try to go that way as well.

I swear some of you don't have any driver training whatsoever. Those of you that drive on the right side of the road should be veering right, under almost no circumstance should you veer left as that is almost always going to be into oncoming traffic. Second, perception/reaction time is anywhere from 0.5-2.5 seconds (can be much longer in the elderly) so 1.3 seconds leaves you at a maximum of 0.8 seconds to make your manuever (and that's if you are 18 years old and have stunning reaction times). 0.8 seconds isn't much time to avoid anything but your first reaction should be brakes and veer right and you shouldn't veer in some circumstances (such as urban environments where the roadside is unsafe).
