A/C repair

Thanks 😀

since you went out of your way to be completly unspecific i'm going to assume your talking about a 5000 BTU window unit.

more than its worth, spend $90 dollars on a new one

If it is a window unit, then it will probably cost about $200 (is my guess). At least $100 for labor and about that for a new fan. It may b worth it if it is a newer unit. If not, don't bother.

Right. Tried spinning it manually while A/C is on, but fan won't spin. I can hear the motor trying to spin it, but no go.

which could be a good thing or a bad thing.....

I see three possibilties ;

The starting capacitor is shot

The bearings are dry <==== Most likely of the three

The windings are shorted

Shut the juice of to the whole unit, you will find a master shut off connected to the whip (the power cable supplying the juice).

Unscrew the phillips screws holding the top fan gaurd on, remove the fan gaurd,apply a few drops of 3 in 1 oil to the top fan bearing under the fan, do the same to the bottom bearings.

If it turns out to be either the cap or windings then you will have to call a repair tech to have it fixed.
