I mean without that extra 256MB of memory you can't even dream about it winning by more than 20%.

i am not so sure you do . . . From Anand's Article: We were interested in testing the FEAR demo, but after learning that the final version would change the performance characteristics of the game significantly, we decided it would be best to wait until we had a shipping game. From what we hear, the FEAR demo favors ATI's X1000 series considerably over NVIDIA hardware, but performance will be much closer in the final version. evidently ati specifically optimized for the demo ;)

The only ppl revelling in this has to be die-hard Nvidiots at guru3d.com. I was hoping the AVIVO would have been better, since that is a feature I would be more inclined to use My PVP is broken by those #$%#% at Nvidia. I also would have liked better opengl performance for some of my CAD apps. I guess I will look to Nvidia still when I switch over to pci-express soon...

Head over to Rage3d, those guys are pretty happy!

Yeah for some reason, much excitement over the "performance crown"

I imagine that is where ronnn is....Good I hope he stays there...

I think he meant that he talked to other people who benched the x1000 series and saw that ATI did better.

That is rather speculative of you!!! Maybe they talked to the game developer???

I have been following computer hardware for just a couple years now and don't find the results all that surprising. For the last few generations, there seems to be some general themes.

Performance is fairly close depending on the game, with nV having and edge in OpenGL and ATI in Direct 3D.

Many have a preference for ATI IQ.

ATI cards seem to suffer somewhat less of a performance loss at high resolution and AA/AF.

High end ATI cards tend to be harder to find at competitive prices while nV has tended to do well with price and availability particularly in the mid range.

Personally, I would be happy with the recent ATI, benchmarks, but disappointed by the fact I couldn't buy one.

I really liked my 9800 pro, but have not had musch luck finding a high end ATI card at a good price when I needed it.

I would sum up by saying: ATI cards are excellent if you can get one.

I went for the 7800GTX but would rather have bought a x1800xt, but it just didn't..um... exist...oh well....

Ya and they couldn't actually dL the demo play the game a few times and get a feel on which one was better or not??? Not to say that they did. I'm not speculating just saying that it is possible. And probably likely. Who would waste time calling a developer when they can just do an informal bench?

Only crazies.

I am still waiting until Christmas when I build my new machine. Whichever is the best price/performance is what will be inside my machine.

Its very easy. I'm sure neither Nvidia or ATI will release a card that TOTALLY blows the competing card out of water. They keep trying to "just" outdo each other in terms of performance whilst boosting their feature list. Now if Sander would have divulged any of the features of R520, he might have been credible. But extrapolating performance numbers based on past history, one could have easily arrived at those results. And as always he put their entire genuinity of the benchmarks on some body elses' court simulataneously giving multitude reasons (overclocks, could have been R520 XL, driver problems, yada yada)

Sander lost all his credibility. Atleast in the eyes of the editors & staff of all major hardware reviewing websites.

i am still hoping for ANY top card in AGP.
Couldnt agree more, except I already have a PCIe system. :p My 6600GT refuses to give up. :D

Duh...obviously the demo shows ATI cards are doing better, but for the ppl who are not just happy with "because" and want to know "why" they would do a bit of research into it. It is not crazy, it is called being thorough and doing a report....

I think the ATI card is slightly better in performance in an overall view, has some neat features (some of which seem to fall short), and has some future options that will come into their own later....

however!!!!! Due to all the trolls and ATi fanatics I was led to belive this 9000-9500 3dmark05 cards was going to not just win by 10% in some apps and lose in others but completely dominate...

Has anyone pulled out that "so-called" spec paper and seen if those percentages have come true??? This thing was overhyped!!!! And for that it is a disappointment. You are 6 months late to the dance and you come only marginally better then the guy on time is not saying much...We are likely half way to the launch of g80 and thus this vicious catch up cycle ATi has itself in will continue....Just a perennial second fiddle I guess....Again this comes from a guy who owns more ATI cards and has owned more ATi cards then Nvidia. just call them like I see them...

maybe you don't have the hardware to run it anyways fear looks awesome :) . I am really interested in seeing a R520vs G70 detail article from anandtech that should have testing of :
Call of duty 2
Quake 4
Fear
Elder scroll 4
Age of empire
Far cry
DOD source

Also review the new NVIDIA drivers
Overclocking results
Image quality comparison
Price comparision
Power consummation comparision
Heat comparision
512MB model vs 256MB model to see the difference in COD2/FEAR

IF anandtech or any trustable website can have an article like that , then we can steal who has the Graphic Crown.

I would like to see it sometime like that late next month :)
The current review by anandtech wasn't as detailed as i wanted ;(

you weren't led to believe anything . . . you consistently downpplayed the r520 and you continue to do so. :p

Overhyped? by WHO[m]? ATI marketing or their fanboys?
:Q
no disappointment there ;)

ANd who's playing fanboy now for nVidia?

Are we 'likely halfway'? or are you just speculating in nVidia's favour?

ATI playing 2nd fiddle? they just released a new card that on it's first day appears to be VERY competitive with nVidia's best . . .

pricing and availibity remains to be seen . . .i ALSO call em like i see em ;)

I never downplayed it.....your use of emoticons is annoying as you have become...;)

Overhyped by all of the above. MORPH, Ronnn, to name a few......And who could forget that wonderful citizen Turtle1....

ATI is second fiddle cause they are late as usual. It is like running the 800m and finishing second but you ran the last 100m faster...In the end it doesn't impress...It doesn't push the envelope. Perhaps they never intended to but ppl expect the latest in the hardware community is better....ooking at ATs review that seems questionable depending on the angle you look at.....

looks like you are picking up some "bad" emoticon habits then . . .
. . . and i have always been annoying to those who disagree with me . . . not "becoming"

You are downplaying it NOW [nevermind your Past denying it]

You sure named a motley crew of fanboys [didn't' think you would forgot MORPH]. . . you actually read their posts? . . . of course, i can name even more nVidiots who also spew partial facts and pro-product BS. Turtle1 was embarassing to ATI fans. ;)
:Q

i AM impressed by r520 . . . it is a VERY nice step over the x800s and a completely new architecture for ati to BUILD on . . . we haven't seen nVidia's "new" stuff yet . . . how can you say ATI is behind? Speed-bumped and enhanced R580 will evidently compete with G80 and then r600 is another "new" GPU to put ati "ahead" . . . then nVidia.

Unless some genius engineer pull off some significant breakthrough we are gonna see ATI and nVidia leapfrog each other FOREVER [well, at least the forseeable future]

i have glasses . . . put down your beer glasses

lol it's a figure of speech - I'm "sad" because ATi has stumbled and now I'll have to pay higher prices for a decent card 5 months before ATi releases anything that maintains a semblance of parity. I'm thinking this catch up cycle will continue with ATi and nVidia will be free to rape us with prices in the future.

Well im kinda disappointed at x1800xl benchmarks cause I cant afford the top end gtx or xt cards over $420USD.

With only $350USD to spend, the benchmarks has slight advantage to 7800gt over x1800xl. Was hoping their xl was like x800xl good performance/price but the ati's x1800xt is significantly better than x1800xl.

Kind of like Doom 3?
