That's like asking, "How can you be alive when the doctor said you've got 2 years to live?"

You == not understanding the concept of time.

Wolverine Gas and Oil is a privately held Grand Rapids business with just 25 employees. The company says found what is being called the largest onshore discovery in at least 30 years.

It's been said, but that's great for Michigan...I don't know how Grand Rapids is doing these days, probably can't be as bad as this side of the state :p

The US consumes roughly 20 million barrels per day. So this discovery would last for 50 days if it was our sole source of oil.

By the way, I was studying for my Mountain Geoecology final exam a year and a half ago with a geology major, and another geology major came in the library and started talking to him. The guy I was studying with said he was going to research oil under some huge folds in Utah. Maybe he's getting rich now.

a billion barrels? That's a lot, seeing that OPEC only produces a few million barrels a day.

The speculation that we'll run out of oil within 50-60 years is total BS, according to the petrolium engineers I talked to. It may be harder to find oil on continental land, but we have barely even tapped into the deep sea oil deposits. Once it becomes uneconomical to drill for oil on land, companies will turn to the sea floor.

But that's total good news that this deposit was discovered. I'm sure there'll be plenty more of these around the world. Maybe eventually we can say "f*ck off!" to all of those oil tycoon SOBs in the Mideast called OPEC.

Well....

So much for the theory that we used most all the oil in the US up in the 70s, lol.

But it's true, a billion barrels isn't that much.....

Actually, you know ... this should be seen as more of a scary thing, than anything.

We're getting excited about 1 billion barrels.......

That's the thing... you never know where you are gonna find oil.

Anyone who says we are gonna run out in X years simply doesn't understand the oil business.

And the fact that old "used" up oil fields are suddenly coming back to life. The whole oil running out is nonsense.

boy, we've got a real smart bunch in here ... if you believe them i guess we'll NEVER run out of oil. since the volume of the earth is finite the only possible source of this infinite supply must be some sort of rift in space/time that connects earth to an infinite number of other planets with oil. nice!

Well, to be fair, they probably mean "In our lifetimes"....

But I digress. When you get old, you start worrying about future generations. So it isn't going to be any more comforting when we're in an urn on the mantle and the world is going to hell in a handbasket. :p
