Yes, like I said, avoid country places riding a brand new bike, you may get a random encounter of highwaymen. But of course, that's common sense that can happen anywhere.

Ok, I'll buy that, I have no problem with many aspects of China, It is beautiful, very nice place to visit, I just don't like the Communist party and the heavy handed tactics of the Chinese government.

yeah i agree that in the past things have been ugly, but things really have gotten better. i have been back twice. the first time was after 7 years, the changes were amazing. everything is market driven, consumerism there is worst than here. hell the standard of living in 7/8 places that i visited was better than my own in the states. if i remember correctly, a consensus reached by my asian studies professors on China is that while the CCP still "ruled", it's pretty much a society driven by capitalism and greed.

I visited the "poorer" places, like where my grandparents lived. until about 8 years ago they don't even have continuous water supply. but they do now, and that is a huge change since the geographic area does not allow pipes to be laid easily. the town today is starting to grow prosperous. but i still must acknowledge that the income disparity of this area, and others similar to it is still high compared to the capitals and major cities of the provinces.

it's the samething here in the states. New York is rich, ithaca, NY not so rich.

while i don't condone the sh!t that goes on with the ccp, the 'F-U' attitude is just distasteful. it's like people are still bitter about losing the civil war. when all's said and done, you're still ethnic chinese like the billions of them in china, why you gotta hate on them. yea, it's ok to have a little superiority complex over mainlanders (i sometimes do as a hong kongese), but chinese is chinese is chinese. i admit that the ccp's gotta change or else it will get changed, but must you hate everything china, every second of your life?

er really, only thing I don't like is the CCP, I love Chinese food and Chinese students... oh yes, especially the ones with big breasts and even better if they have green eyes like Miao Yin. 😉

Next month I'll post a thread on "A big F-U to Taiwan's nationalist party" just to make you feel better okay. 😀

Um I'm native Taiwanese (yes being native Taiwanese is very important and if you understand Taiwanese politics, you would know why) and I friggn hate commies ok. China is just behind technologically still. It's like Taiwan 30 years ago. My mom tells me how this was Taiwan was when she left during our visit to Sichuan. But look at Shanghai. The skyline changes every month. IT really is amazing. When you finish visiting China, all you ABCs or whatever should really be in awe and should respect your homeland.

Stop with the Rhetoric already. China has had its fill of Socialist BS and it all failed. The eonomy is embracing Capitalism (sorry Marx/Lenin) and is slowly improving the life of its citizens.

so you hate commies cause they are technologically behind? or does taiwanese politics condition you to hate commies?...which would be similar to the ccp conditioning the chinese to hate everything non-chinese.

btw, i hope you're not supporting communist china by buying products manufactured there.

classic anti-china argument. have you ever even set foot in mainland china? no? then stfu

EDIT: oh yeah, i am not saying communism is good. i am just saying that China has changed a lot and has come a long way. but you are obviously too stupid to see any of that.

Do we all need to head to south africa to experience the HIV/AIDs epidemic first hand, or can we rely on crediable news sources to provide some sort of insight into the history and recent events to give us a good picture on how it is progressing.

if you have a degree in east asian studies from an ivy league university, then come and argue with me.

So would you need an CS degree to argue with me? 😕

I'm sorry if it offends you to think that the liberties one recieves in the US, compared to that of China are a little skewed. Especially when comments are made about the CCP.

Let me see how many Political prisoners we keep.... Hmmmm.. anyone? Does Gitmo count? Someone will have to help me out here, for some legitimate political prisoners.

Again the arguement is about the CPP, nothing against the Chinese. 😉

What a moronic comment. Do Americans say that they're British? Hell fvcking no. So if someone is born in Taiwan, they should consider themselves Taiwanese, but of course acknowledge that they are Chinese as well

China is a GREAT place to visit. But its the people who have been brain washed by the govt. that have lost their moral senses. The Chinese govt. prohibit from freedom of religion but only to believe in the communist party. You go traveling in China theres temples and ancient god icons everywhere, but the govt. bans this and teaches their people to become marcism. Most mainlanders I know are narrow minded and if you decide to eat at a Chinese (not Taiwanese) restuarant, do not expect any type of customer service. I can assume its they're up bringing in a communist country to step over someone to earn a dollar.

they have tens of thousands of protests a year already. its all supressed. of course if you go visit you won't see much of the dirty sh*t. its how oppressive authoritarian regiems are. very good at hiding stuff. plus u tend to stick to cities

In the end China will become just as democratic and capitalistic as the USA, capitalism is just a better system... most economies gravitate in that direction, and democracy comes right behind capitalism. So you guys can argue all you want... in the end... we win.

China is unique in these sense that overpopulation and varying ethnic groups competing for power can create a very unstable population/civil strife. Communism has failed, but the Chinese have been able to incorporate the successful aspects of capitalism to increase their GDP and improve the standard of living for most of it's citizens.

Recent history has shown that moving rapidly from a system of authoritatrian rule to full democracy can wreak havok. Look at the former Yugoslavia, the communist leadership was able diminish racial/economic strife for 40 years, but as soon as the government was dismantled we had a situation of almost instant genocide. China has over 100 MILLION Muslims already that have seperatist goals, and tons of other ethnic groups all competing for the same resources. The Chinese need a strong government for the time being. An inevitable consequence of open markets will be democracy, it will happen incrementally, not in a revolutionary sense.

Finally some sense into this thread.
