A beautiful day to put an old friend at peace..

Just got back from the vets where the ex and I had to put an old friend to rest.

Our 15 year old Cocker mixed has been suffering from congestive heart failure and had taken a turn for the worse. He could hardly get around that last couple of days and his breathing was very labored and worst of all he hardly recongnized us anymore.

It's a beautiful fall day here in Lower Michigan, upper 60's, sunny without a cloud in the sky. We took "Wendall" out on the side lawn where he could be comfortable. While a light breeze blew we held him in our arms as the vet administered his final medication. Soon his labored breathing subsided and we cried while he quietly slipped into a peaceful, well deserved rest. When we looked up Tim, our vet, was wiping the tears from his eyes as well, you see Wendall had been his friend for 15 years too.

An old dear friend has gone to a better place where he will be in pain no longer. Waiting to welcome him will be my father and his best buddy "Mac" who passed a few years ago. Tucked in the blanket we wrapped him in was the remains of a tattered old sock that he and Mac use to play tug of war with. The sock had been virtually untouched since Mac had to be put down, without his buddy Wendall had simply lost interest in playing sock tag and found other activities to hold his interest.

Tonight I'll build a casket for him and Wednesday night the family will hold a small service to pay our last respects to a devoted member of the family. We will lay him to rest in woods on our property next to his faithful old buddy where they can be together once again.

It was a beautiful day in Michigan today but still my heart aches at the passing of an old friend.

And as a last parting gesture, he left a puddle in the trunk of my car. He always had that problem whenever he went to vet. This time I won't complain or curse him, I'll just clean the car with tears in my eyes.

Dasm it, now I'm gonna start crying.

It's always hard to lose a friend. Even though he was just a dog, he was close to your heart and part of the family.
Even though it's hard to let go, it was for the best. You ended his suffering and made sure he was able to see this beautiful day before passing on. I would do the same if my dog was in this situation.

My sincerest condolences :(

I have a Cocka-Poo at my Mom's house in Colorado. She is getting up in the years and your post almost made me cry. I am sorry for your loss. You and Wendall were lucky to have each other.

Fathom4,
A truly beautiful post. My family laid to rest 3 family pets in the house that I grew up in. When my parents moved, part of my "conditions/requests" to the new owners was that they please never remove the grave markers of our pets. They abided by it over the past 7 years. The house has been sold once again and I hope that the new owners are aware of my request. I don't think that nonpet owners truly understand and appreciate the fact that to many of us, pets are part of the family.

I also extend my condolences for the passing of your friend, Wendall. It brings back memories of my dog from my childhood -- a 13 year old Wiemaraner who will always hold a special place in my heart.

This also strikes a cord with me since we almost lost our hedgehog last week though it turns out that she is perfectly fine. My wife and I have become quite attached to the little critter, and I'm not looking forward to the day when we have to say goodbye to her. Pets are wonderful, but I just wish they'd live forever or at least longer than me. :(

Damn...I'm an old softie at heart and your post has me teary-eyed.

I've endured the deaths of a few of my pets, and it never gets easier. We had a recent scare with our 10-year-old Airedale, but he's ok. However, it'll mess me up when his time comes. It always does.

I agree, you did the right thing for your friend.

Losing someone to death is tough. I don't know how I'll ever deal with my wife's (when I get married) or my parents' death when the bell tolls for them.

I am sorry pal.

I remember my puppy got run over when I was 5 I cried so much, his name was danny
my girlfriends german sheppard ran away last year, she still cries missing him occassionally.

I just can't bare to have pets anymore, too emotionally demanding.
Wendall is in a better place, may he rest in peace, along with danny.
