A-10

What I always liked about the A10 was how many weapons you could mount to the wings. Maverick Air to Ground missiles, Sidewinder Air to Air missiles, Rockeye cluster bombs, and even larger bombs with laser guidance. That plane is like a 1 man flying weapons platform!

I like it. I played those A-10 games on the PC and I liked that more than regular air to air combat games. To me it was funner going on attack runs against enemy tanks and raking them with shells.

man i have always loved hte A-10. just an amazing machine. IT not only takes massive damage but can deal it out!

to bad they are phazing it out.

The A-10 was responsible for an amazing 80% of all armored vehicle kills in the Gulf War, a task it usually accomplishes with its GAU-8/A Avenger cannon, which fires 30mm ammunition in a mix of DU and HE shells at a rate of 3900/min and can completely destroy any tank ever built in less than a second. (The entire plane was built around the gun, which is 21 feet long and produces a recoil force of 17,000lbs when firing.) Pilots fight to fly it. The ground troops love it. It's low maintenance, inexpensive, reliable as an AK-47 and just as hard to break.

yeap just a flat out amazing machine. just looking at it you can tell it kicks ass. With that huge gun sitting out in the front its a scary sight!

edit: grr i had a movie of one in action. see it flying and hear a GRRR then see a tank explode. Had al ot of small movies from Desert stome but lost the HD.

Havn't heard that, they have another dedicated close air support plane on the roadmap? All I'm aware of are the F-22 taking the superiority role from the F-15 and the F-35 taking the zergling role from the F-16 (and B767 varients taking up AWACS, tanker and transport roles from the B707 family)

Don't Google search for p-38 even with safesearch on for that matter, unless you want to see a 2-inch cannon on the front of an old battle hardened jackass. 😀

they thought of most everything when designing that plane. The pylon mounted engines are close enough to centerline to prevent excessive yaw during single engine operation. The engine location above and behind the wing masks the engine heat from heat seeking missles fired from the front of the craft, usually by tagets getting hammered by the A-10's weaponry. From behind, the tail does mask part of the engine heat also.
The "titanium bathtub" wrapped around the pilot made for the safest possible situation in a sky full of shrapnel and shells.

one of the best planes we have. it is a master at destroying groud units and targets. i don't think anything comes close

as for being reliable and durable, again, nothing comes close. this plane can take so much damage and still fly as almost perfect. it is so much sturdier than other planes.

good job to the designers of this plane

That's my favorite plane...also like the F4U Corsair.

A-10s are awesome.....the depleted uranium shells the cannon fires are as bug as a coke bottle. It can fly missing half a wing, one engine, and a stabilizer IIRC.

anyone else remember the game A-10 thunderbolts? it may only have been a Macintosh game.....

I made models of both. The Corsair was a welcome sight to my dad during the assaults in the Pacific theatre. They would fly right in to the caves, it seemed like to him.
