I'd go for the maha c204f charger + 1800 mah batteries. 60-160 minute charging times for 40 bucks shipped.
It's rated as pretty much the BEST. it charges more fully then other chargers and I can attest to it's speed. It's charging the batteries for my fujifilm 2800 RIGHT now. I've never even seen the low battery sign using these babies :-D

Oh and FYI the reason DIG cam's EAT alkaline batteries is because they aren't designed to give 1.2 volts the entire time. Rather they DROP their voltage output like a ROCK after a certain point. So basically you have a battery thats half full, but doens't consistently put out enough energy to feed a dig cam. If you took those batteries and slapped em in a remote I bet they'll work fine.

thanks for the post, but still not seeing it for $40 shipped, its coming to $42.94 shipped for me.
are these really that good? I already have a set of 4 Rayovac Rechargables (1600mah) but they take like 12 hours to fully charge.

GT:

The duration of the full charge is alleged to be more of a function of the charger than that of the battery itself.

I bought a similar (looks the same) charger, 4x 1800 mAH NexCell batteries, and a car adapter for $22.99 + $5.50 s/h on eBay.

Agreed- I have the exact same setup and the battery life is phenomenal. Easily over 250-300 photos on one set of batteries, and that's with leaving the camera on accidentally, occasionally. The charger IS the best one as it's highly rated everywhere, and it does charge 'em quick. I use GP 1800mAH AA batteries- got 8 of them (use one set, charge the other set!) plus the charger on eBay for ~$45.

The Maha is a very good charger but if you want a true 1 hour charger, get the Rayovac. The differences between the two chargers are, the Rayovac charges in one hour or less and the Maha is 60-160 minutes depending on the number of batteries and if the batteries are needing a full charge or partial charge. The Maha conditions NiCads and the Rayovac doesn't. If you're running NiMH than the point is moot.

Here's a link to a post I made a few days ago and it has some links and reviews that might be helpful. I am sure the Maha is a very nice charger but I wanted the one hour charger instead of a range of 1-3 hours. The Rayovac also charges a single 9V NIMH for what it's worth.

So does anyone know if we'll be able to get Li-ion rechargable AA batteries anytime in the near future?

Just get a li-ion battery from a laptop and hook that up :) I dunno, I'd like to know the same thing, but I'm guessing the price is prohibative. I've seen lithium ion batts for digital cameras and they are like $15 for a pair that are NOT rechargable. Ouch.

Anyway, just want to mention I've had GREAT experiance with maha charger, it charges quick and reliable, and I've ordered from thomas distributing before, so if you are in the market for rechargable batteries and or chargers, thats one of the places I would look.

Sam's Club is selling an Energizer NiCd/NiMH charger with 8 1700mAH NiMH AA batteries for only $19.95. The charger is not a quick model and requires 15-20 hours to recharge a set of batteries but at that price, who cares?

Last week I bought the new Kodak NiMH quick charger & 4 1700mAh AA combo from Thomas. I hope they'll work out for me. The reason I picked the Kodak over the other better (proven) chargers is that there is no AC power block with the Kodak, which is very important to me as I have a quite snug (read: portable) digi cam case (for the Olympus 2100UZ) that will NOT take one of those power blocks. The Kodak has a conceal-able flip-out plug that goes directly into the socket.

Wow, that's worth it for the batteries along probably. I'll have to check there, I already have the maha charger, but I wouldn't turn down a few sets of batts for that price :)

I don't believe you'll ever get a true AA battery in Lithium ion.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a single Li-ion cell is like 3 volts (a little more maybe?) so a 1.5V battery would be impossible -unless they did something crazy like incorporate a dc-dc converter in the cell :)

of course, they can make them the same size and shape, but they won't have the standard ~1.5volts and would likely damage things that you put them in.

I got the Maha deal at Newegg a while back. It's really great with the NiMH. I also used it to resurrect a NiCd pack for a portable phone. I had to separte the cells in the 3.6V pack, but after two reconditioning cycles, they would hold a good charge again. Now if I could just convert my two phones to NiMH from NiCd, I'd be happy, but that's a no-no without hacking the phone's charging circuit, I'm told!

In this weeks Target ad they have the 4pk AA Energizer Nimh batts on sale for 9.97. These are the new 1600 or 1700 mah (can't remember which) that are in the green pack.

I'm not suggesting this deal is better than buying the battery/charger from Sam's Club but if all you need are extra batts then it's not a bad deal.

Cot, if what you say is true, it seems to depend on application. With my olympus camera, it came with 2 lithium 3V batts that simply replace the 4 alkaline 1.5V batts. So, the 3V batteries would need to be used in devices that require at least two AA batteries.

whoa.. sorry about forgetting the link, but thats covered. Anyway, from what i've read our shakespearian friend falstaff is right. It's the charger that really breaths live into batteries. The maha uses a microprocessor design which detects when a battery is full(as opposed to a timer which most older chargers used) and thus begins trickle charge. Apparently the detection is more sensitive or something because it charges better then other chargers.

according to This site anyway.

-edit-
oh yea, It IS 42 bucks, I just rounded off...

-edit 2-
You'll get better deals on ebay, especially with that guy who sells the maha with 8 GP batteries.
I didn't go for it.. cause it took too long to ship =)
