___ New AOpen nForce2 setup... No PCI serial controller found... after modem install ___ UPDATE

I've installed 98SE (owners choice), on a Non-OCd AOpen AK79G-1394. It's set up with a 2500+ Barton, using the onboard IGP, 512mb PC2700 with no other PCI cards installed (other than USR Performance Pro modem). I've loaded the latest nVIDIA NF2 unified drivers. Downloaded current Windows updates.

* System was fine before I tried installing the modem. The modem doesn't appear in the device manager, even after a seemingly successful driver install.
* I've moved the modem from one slot to the next, but it's still not recognized in the device manager.
* In the device manager under "Other devices" I get this message... PCI Serial Controller... "The drivers are not installed (Code 28)"

I've tried to install ever driver I could find on the AOpen setup CD, but Windows still doesn't recognize any as being for the PCI Serial Controller.

im guessing you just ran out of IRQs

I did disable the onboard firewire controller and the LAN controller.
I do have the USB keyboard enable, but I'm using a PS/2 keyboard. I'll go back through the BIOS and clean up everything I'm not using.

BTW, I've got the BIOS set up to auto-assign the IRQs.

Do you see the modem listed with the other devices after POST?

No, the modem isn't listed in the device manager at all at this point.
I'm going to remove the offending device in Safe Mode and install the latest USR drivers for the modem.

Blain, my nForce2 board enumerates the cards in the expansion slots when it POSTs. Does that board do the same? Does the modem show up in the list? If the BIOS doesn't see the modem then win98 won't either. Maybe the modem is dead?

I'm having trouble loading the newest drivers. I think it's the GoBack that I've installed. The GoBack is being disabled right now. It takes a very long time for it to flush its data. I wish it could just be turned on and off, but nooooooo... it drops ALL its saved data when disabled. It's like starting all over again, except without having to reinstall the app.

It's the nForce2 mobo drivers. They have a problem with some PCI modems in my limited experience. Take the time to do a reinstall of 98se and don't intstall the mobo drivers. Then try the modem. I have installed 98SE, all the M$ updates and my modem worked fine. As soon as I installed the nForce2 drivers the modem was no good. Tried three of the same modems with the same results. However, another modem with a different chipset worked fine. I e-mailed the modem mfr and they claim no knowledge of this problem.

I did get the USR hardware modem installed (it seems). I installed it through the "Add New Hardware" in the control panel.
But I still get Windows finding a "PCI Serial Controller" that it wants a driver for. I still can't find a driver that it sees as being for this mystery controller.
