__ Ideas on this desk? __

Right now I'm using our old kitchen table with an added leaf for my desk. It's super deep from front to back (which I love). But it's not all that wide. I was thinking about having a desk built to my specs.
I know several people who have wordworking equipment. They would build me a desk for little or no labor costs. I would have to foot the bill for the materials. I'd used some type of laminated material for the top and shelves. That would be the costliest part of the desk.
I just don't like the form, construction or price of pre-fabbed desks.

It's a crude pic I know... But does this design look comfortable and efficient? Any suggestions?

I agree. It's hard finding a desk that suits my needs without having to spend a thousand + dollars for it. The best desk I ever had was a wrap-around type desk. Unfortunately I had to leave it behind when I moved to Alaska because of its size. It could also be difficult to find the space for it in a room, unless the desk had a room to itself.

Hard to tell about that drawing but it still looks a bit narrow. If I were to custom build a desk I'd make sure that I have plenty of desktop space for other things besides the monitor and keyboard, etc. I hate having to always push my keyboard aside to do something like balancing the checkbook or something that I'd write with a pen. Also I'd make sure there is room if I ever wanted to go with a mulit-monitor setup so that I'd still have the desktop space I need.

My monitor is 21", so that's why I like the deeper desk. I use a wireless keyboard, moving it is a snap.
I would make sure the desk was plenty wide. But I still want components close enough to reach them from my chair.

The drawing isn't to scale 😉

My desk is 31" deep by 63" wide. Was great with a 21" CRT monitor on top. Now I have a widescreen LCD and it's still great - I can have all my computer stuff, and still have plenty of room on both sides of my keyboard and mouse for a legal pad or book or whatever.

I loathe those little desks with all the shelves and compartments and drawers etc. Mine is just a desk, (table-ish) and then I have a rolling file cabinet under one side of it. Works great.

FYI I think I only paid $125-150 for it, which isn't bad at all. If you want a real desk, don't go to home stores or office depot etc - go to OFFICE furniture stores. I found exactly what I wanted, and only paid about twice as much as it would have cost for me to get one of those piece of crap particle board things. This one actually looks nice, too.

There are two desk "modifications" I'd recommend building in - first, find a good huge powerstrip ard make sure you have a way to mount it to the desk and run the wires. Hang a fluorescent lightstick underneath as well, also screwed into the desk. Makes life 100 times easier when you're digging around in all the cables etc that accumulate if you have a lot of computer crap. Also if you use a lot of USB - would be sweet to flush mount a USB hub into the top or something like that.

Edit: Oh yeah. I also acheived inner peace by getting a 20 foot parallel cable, and relocated my printer to the other corner of my room. Now I don't have to listen to it while it's printing, and it doesn't take up valueable space on/around my desk. Just a thought.

Is your printer that loud? 😉
The power strip is a good idea. I've got two UPS's with my goods plugged into. I could mount two power strips on the back of the desk and power each of them with their own UPS.
I don't have a bunch of USB components right now. Most would be "never unplug" type. For all the others I have a USB/CF/SM reader/writer thingie in a drive bay.

i have a really sturdy two-level metal desk made or steel or iron or something... seriously heavy. i bought it at the old-furniture store for 75 bucks, excellent condition. really wide... have two monitors on here right now. can easily fit two 21 inch monitors. 50" by 27". and the two levels provides for extra space... the room under the first level has little shelves for placing books, cds, etc. enough room for keyboards and writing. and the level for the keyboard is adjustable, so i can move it up and down (i have to remove 8 screws though...). the second level is split into two parts... so i can have them at two different heights for different uses as well.

my favorite though was this really big dining table like setup we had... wanna say 50" by 35", $150.

This is very close to what I'm thinking about. But I don't think I could live with the 29" depth.
Even if I'd let the monitor hang over the back of the desk, I would still lose more than 8" from what I've got now. The $170 shipped price does seem very reasonable though.

If I went with a wall mount like This One, I could get by with a 24" depth desk, no problem.
I'd love to get the monitor up off the desk top. But @ $100, I'm not sure.

My monitor weighs in at 70.4 lbs. So a cheaper mount would work.

LOL... well i was sitting on it hahahah... trying to see if it would bend down overtime due to a heavy CRT monitor... 😀
