__ Engine Code Scanner? __

Blain

Lifer
It's time to invest in some type of code scanner. I'm NOT going to Auto Zone every time I want to check something out.

I've got a 92/S10/4.3L that I need info on. Straight up code scanners are running less than $50 shipped for an OBD-I vehicle.
I've also got a 95/Prizm/1.5L I'd like to be able to scan.

* Should I buy an all-in-one scanner that will work with both cars (More $$), or just get a code scanner for the S10 right now?
* Quality scanners... Sunpro/Actron... Equus... Auto Xray?

For what it can do for me and the frustration it would save, I don't have any problem forking over the cash for something good.

Any suggestions?

I used Fluke scanners while I was in school for auto.
they are very nice... but quite expensive.
i am not sure if you can get a scanner like that for cheap... sucks that not all cars do the self diagnostic like Dodge cars do. on my car I just have to turn the key on and off 3 times and then watch for codes. i then reference them to a book or on the net and it lets me know what the problem is.
WHY THE HELL do all car companies not do this???

on your 92 GM just short the two connectors on the ALDL to flash the 'check engine' light which will correspond with numbers in your code book.

or you can buy little plastic things to plug into the ALDL which will jump it for you and is less messy.

I know there is the "pin shorting" method of getting the dash to flash a code. I'd rather just plug & read.
Anybody use any of the brands listed?
