i also dig the compact sigs, especially in .357 sig. you can get them in 9mm, but why?? but they are quite a ways out of your price range iirc.

and i totally agree with you on the glocks. i love the full size ones, and dont like the feel of the smaller sizes.

I've heard great things about the Walther. Hard to go wrong with a Glock.

The best thing to do would be to try them out and see what feels comfortable to you.

Why 9mm? I'd be going for .40 for concealed carry / protection ... more stopping power.

You could always go the Snatch route ... intimidate people with a Desert Eagle .50. 😉

Except that guns costs about $1,000!!! Waste of money IMO. Not very concealable either.

Edit-I shot a DE .44 Magnum a few times and it had a nasty tendancy to kick the spent casings right back at the shooter's face. Ever get a hot shell stuck between your cheek and your eye protection? It's not pleasant.

Come on, this will blend right in.

I agree with the criticism of the smaller Glocks, I hate them unless modded with a grip extension.

It just feels weird having my ring finger on the edge of the handgrip & my pinky finger hanging onto nothing.

A & G Grip Extension

A &G Grip Extension for using Hi-Capacity Magazines in the Glock Models 26,27,33. That's right you can now use a Glock Model 17 or 19 Hi-Cap Mag in a G26 or a Glock Model 22 or 23 Hi-Cap Mag in a G27 or G33, or you can use Model 20 or 21 high-cap mags in your Model 29 or 30. This new accessory slides over the magazine and adds length to the grip, so that the G-26,27,33,29,30 pistols have the feel and the capacity of their respective bigger brothers.

I had a shell casing get in my shirt before...it sucks. A loaded weapon in your hand and your jumping around because some red hot shell is burning your nipple off. I hate that.

I thought about a desert eagle just for novelty purposes. Just a fun gun to own and shoot...deafen those around you at the range. 🙂

As for the OP, I have a bias towards glocks myself, so I say go with the glock 19. Same trigger pull as any other glock as well in case you ever decide to get another one.

Being a CO, my dept allows 2 9mm's. Something bigger would be nice, but something is better than nothing. And being able to carry anywhere in the US has is a plus.

The XD sub-compact would be my first choice for that size but some people are telling me that accuracy goes out the window at 25 yards. But then again, we only have to qualify back to 15 yards with an off duty weapon.

Would you choose a sub-compact first if most of what you were not doing much concealed carry?

Heheheh, try it in your mouth. When I was in the nationals on the pistol range I had one eject directly between my slightly parted lips, instantly seared itself there. I finished the round, then had to have the range officer peel my lips off the casing.

It's happened other times too, but it has only seared on that once. It's a hazard of the way I stand when I shoot.

my choice would be a glock 19, it fits my hands perfectly. of course the best way would to go to a gun shop and test them until you get the one that you are most comfortable with.

Yea, I'd say....but still made me smile thinking about it happening. 🙂

I carry my dept-issue Glock 22 on and off-duty. I'm probably going to get a Glock 23 to use as a backup gun, but I'll probably still carry the 22 off-duty. I don't like the compact version as a primary very much because it doesn't feel right in my hand...the grip is a little too short and hinders my speed reloading, but that's just me. Go with the G19 (or if you can conceal a full-size go with the G17).

Meh - I'm really not sold on .357 Sig. +P 9mm ammo can achieve similar ballistics, and with 9mm you can buy 100-round Winchester range packs for $11.94 at Wal-Mart. .357 Sig is costly to shoot, and I honestly see little advantage to it. Theoretically it feeds better due to the necked cartridge, but I have never had a FTF with my Glock 17. I prefer to stick to 9mm and .45 ACP, because the ammo is so readily available.

hk - p7m8 is the nicest 9mm i've ever owned.
though the sig 228 was really good as well.
i had a glock 19c but didnt think that much of it. i dont like the glock trigger pull.
definitely try them all at a rent range, then go for the one that fits best. and dont let a few hundred dollars keep you from the one that fits best.
good luck
