9mm or .357 sig?

Which would you choose and why? is the 357 that much more effective?

The ammo seems about 2.5x as expensive. Is that about right?
 
.357 for the effective "stopping power". Yes ammo is more expensive, but isn't your life worth it?
 
is the 2.5x more expensive figure about correct? yes it's worth it, but if I shoot 1000 rounds through it at the range....
 
so is it gonna sit in a drawer till you hear a clatter in the middle of the night(.357mag), or are you gonna be at the range maybe once or twice a month (9mm)
 
i carry a 9mm ruger. but the one handgun im still looking to buy is a coonan arms chrome plated semi auto .357. just a beautiful gun. that is when i would switch. as far as 9mm not having the stopping power, i use gold dot hollow points, not many people will be moving after one of those to the midsection.
 
If you're intending to use it as a range weapon, just something to plink around with buy based on ammo price. If you're going to trust your life to it, buy the most effective caliber and eat the costs of pumping a box of ammo through it every few months.

what he said. a 9mm is a great range gun. it can also easily kill someone so it's not like it's worthless for home defense. Something like a .357 would be better for home defense and something like a shotgun is even better than that. Personally, I'd get a 9mm
 
The .357 SIG round is not .357 Magnum, it is a .355 in a necked down higher-pressure .40 case. There is more recoil than the standard 9mm in most loads, and ammo isn't as abundant. I never really liked mine when I owned it...I'd rather have a heavier grain .357 magnum. It isn't a bad round, and serves its purpose well, but you would probably be better off with the 9mm. Of course trying them out is the best way to determine whether or not it will be the right fit for you personally.

My claim is that all of the people I have shot with my Glock 17 (9mm) are very dead and have no complaints about the lethality of the round. I am fully willing to demonstrate this fact on anyone who claims otherwise. 😀

can't you use .38 special ammo in a .357 as well? how much does that cost compared to 9mm? i know its a bit less than .357.

I have a 9mm Taurus and i love it. its a bit big so not great for concealed carry, but works great.

Around here, .38 special and 9mm are comparable in price. .38 is just a little bit more expensive, but not that much.

when my friend bought his .45 he started making his own ammo........ a lot cheaper (well at least when he was doing it).

You can shoot .38 special in a .357 Magnum, but not in a .357 SIG. The SIG is a different round than .357 Magnum, a gun chambered in .357 SIG will not chamber .38 special.

I wanted to make sure the OP knew that there are two rounds labeled .357 and they are not the same.
 
speaking of guns and stuff, are there any companies out there that sell factory made mags other than the actual manufacturer?

for instance, i'd like to get some more factory mags for my Taurus but don't want to spend $40 + shipping for 1 mag if I don't have to.

That is one of the cheapest places I have been able to find for any mags.

You generally want to stick with factory mags for any handgun though, after market mags are just not the same, unless you are talking about 1911 mags. that I think it the only exception.

You think those are spendy, try having 6 HK handguns to get mags for. Those prices are downright robbery 😛

I have a Glock 32 in both 9mm and .357Sig

The .357Sig has sharper recoil, but nothing unmanagable if you are used to 9mm.

It only took 1 shot for me to decide on .357Sig over 9mm if it was for defense.

No kidding...did we just fall off the turnip truck here? :laugh:

BTW-I've never actually fired or owned a weapon chambered in .357 Sig. I always looked at that caliber as kind of a nitch caliber. The reason it's expensive is because there are relatively few guns chambered for it. Kind of like the 10mm which I also consider a nitch or specialty caliber.

I own a .32 ACP, a 9mm, two .45 ACP's and a .44 Magnum handgun. I have also owned a couple .38 Specials and a .357 Magnum (which I kind of regret selling actually).

I'd go with a .45 ACP...or a good .357 revolver. .357 Mag is a very very effective stopper and you can shoot .38 Special through it all day long at the range for about the cost of a 9mm.
