993 911 vs 996 911

NFS4

No Lifer
Which series do you prefer or like better? I prefer the looks of the old 993 Series. It's just something about that shape that just stands the test of time. I mean, it STILL looks good to this day. I don't think you could say the same about the 996 30 years from now. Of the '95 - '98 models, my pick would be a '97 Carrera 4 in Arctic Silver. The wild child in me screams for a '97 Turbo S in Yellow....DROOOOOOOOOOL😛

And no, I ain't posting pics...if you don't know what either looks like, then NO SOUP FOR YOU! 😀

<< And no, I ain't posting pics...if you don't know what either looks like, then NO SOUP FOR YOU! >>

So this poll is only for those who are l33t enough to know the difference in body styles

I agree that the 993 still looks good, but I literally get weak in the knees looking at a new 996. The amazing smoothness of it all... it's like a fighter jet or something. So sleek and aerodynamic. I like the Turbo the best out of the bunch. The GT2 is the best performer obviously, but I don't like the extra intake at the front of the hood. The air dam and side intakes on the Turbo are... perfection.

And the wheels! Ooh god the Turbo wheels I think are the best looking wheels ever made. And with those beautiful cross-drilled brakes with red calipers... gives me chills.

And there's no doubt that the 996 brings the performance up a notch from the 993.

I agree that the 996 series is flippin' awesome!! 🙂 But when it comes to the coupes, I think that the 993 series looks better. With the cabriolets, the 996 series hands down (mainly b/c of the flush stowing of the top when down).

The 996 Turbo just looks horrendus to me. The 993 Turbo is just MAGNIFICENT 😀 As far as performance goes, I think that a 993 Turbo would be able to hold its own against the 996 Turbo.

993 all the way. At least the 993 was still technically air-cooled. I am not a fan of the liquid-cooled Porsches in general, though a 924S does have some appeal.

Definitely the 993 and you are right about the look standing the test of time; the 996 is sweet too but it has a larger body style that not only adds to the vehicle's weight but also closely resembles body styles of ordinary consumer cars. The 993 body style is unique to the Porsche line of cars which is part of what makes Porsche a distinctive market to a particular class of consumers.

Besides, the 1995 911 Turbo 993 kicks some serious butt in NFS5!

<< what does Carrera mean? In Porsche terms 😀 And how would i tell the difference between a Carrera and non-Carrera. >>

I believe that all non-turbo cars are Carreras.

With the 996 you have:

Carrera 2
Carrera 4
Carrera Cabriolet
Carrera 4S
Targa
Turbo
Turbo GT2
GT3

There are probably more as 996 models are about as numerous as Bebe's Kids 😀

I don't really know, but you have to get one in signal yellow🙂

<--- Dad owns a '72 911 Targa in signal yellow😀

ah ok, i get it. Thanks.

I take it Carrera could also in a sense refer to all cars in the 911 series that are not turbo charged? You got your Targa, Cabriolet and Coupe Carrera's...... And then the 911 Turbo and Gt2, which don't carry the Carrera name.

I love the look of the 996 from the rear, since that's all you'll ever see of it. 😛 But really, it looks very aggressive and muscular from that side, I love the wide fender flares and wide rear tires. The front of it doesn't inspire too much from me tho.

*edit* After looking at pics, I still can't really decide. the 993 looks muscular too. The 996 is missing the obligatory "headlights higher than the hoodline" look of the older Porsches.

In terms of looks, I prefer the 993. It symbolizes everything that is Porsche to me. The 993 Turbo would be my favorite.

Regarding performance, I read somewhere that the 993 Turbo is faster than the 996 Turbo...I don't remember where I read it nor how accurate itwas..but something that I remember.

And since I probably will never get a chance to drive either car in real life, I must use NFS5 to satisfy my addiction, and I find the 993 handles a bit better...I like how the rear end flies out ...heh

oh, its all about the 993 series....classic, smooth, good looking and incredibly fast

the 996 still has too much of the boxster look to it, not enough of an original design or execution.

993 in pure looks. 996 in performance.

The 996 series still looks drop dead gourgeous, but the 993 series will always been what I remember when I think of Porsche.

There are quite a few Carreras here, so I see them almost everyday. Such sweet, sweet, sweeeeeet cars... I'll have one someday 😀

Nope. The original Turbo (and all turbos officially) are called "Turbo Carrera". The "Carrera" designation first appeared in the 356's equipped with the then-new Ernst Fuhrmann (SP?) designed four-cam engine (the "carrera four-cam" in Porschephile circles). "Carrera" re-appeared in referrence to the 911 with the 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7, and until 1983 "Carrera" designated the highest performing non-turbo 911, while "Turbo Carrera" designated the turbo. After 1983 the "Carrera" designation was applied to all naturally aspirated 911's (except the Targa and the Speedster, which are not Carreras) with the Turbo still being officially designated as the "Turbo Carrera" but badged only as "Turbo".

EDIT: The "Carrera" designation comes from a famous North American road race, the Carrera Pan-Americana, and the 356 Carreras were named in honour of a Porsche victory in that race, from then on the designation just kind of stuck.

<< I think the latest 911 is a better all round car than the 993-911 >>

It's a better "all around" car, but the 993's just have that "edge" 😀

I love the 993 for looks. I would want it in yellow or the light blue they were offered in. For the 996 the ones I like best are the GT2 and GT3 models. Of course I would take any Porsche you gave me.
