Just came back from costco. In light of the recent power price hike, I bought some fluorescent lighbulbs. The ones that plug into regular sockets. Do those have the same problems as far as fatigue from the flicker that the overhead long fluorescent bulbs have?

No, they're good but burn out sooner than expected.

I bought some of those a year ago...one night I flicked on the porch lights and one of them starting humming ..LOUD..then 20 seconds later a plume of smoke came out of the base...:Q all the other have been working great...Just hope to be home if that happens again..😕
 
Unless you have a huge family, costco is not worth the membership price. The savings comes from bulk buying and lack of service, not from the $45 membership. That's just pure profit. Also, grocery store sale prices are often better than costco prices without having to buy in bulk.
My friend has membership, and he buys me these cash cards, so I don't need to buy a membership.
Even with that I only shop in costco maybe once every 4 months.
 
Our staples:

Muffins - Gotta love 'em
Potstickers
Kirkland jeans - Almost as good as Levis for $13
Frozen Chicken Breasts
Chicken tenders
Shrimp Scampi
Appliances (Most kirkland signature are made by Whirlpool)
Huge containers of nuts for cheap.
Furniture

One thing NOT to get there: DVD's, especially new ones. Get 'em at Wal-Mart and save $5.

One item of interest, if you're reading this thread - Costco just opened a home store in Kirkland (Seattle suburb). We went there, and it's more like a designer furnishing store than a typical Cosco, but prices were fair. Not our cup of tea, but not bad.

giant muffins that are so big 1/2 is all you need for breakfast.

giant bag of pancake mix, makes insane number of servings for almost nothing.

giant bottle of syrup for pancakes

2lb bags of coffee beans and filters

umm..giant bag of straws..

200-pk Kirkland trash bags for $10. We bought a box in March, and it lasted us until Dec. I love not having to buy trash bags for 9 months. And they're the good, draw-string kind.
 
- frozen chicken breasts
- eggs (cheap cheap especially when the stores haven't had sales for a few weeks!)
- kiwis
- bananas (3lbs for a dollar vs 69 cents at most stores, 65 cents at albertsons, and even on sale at alberstons it was 37 cents a pound)
- water (the cases of bottled water and the 2.5 gallon things... la tap water = nasty)
- cereal (boxes of honey bunches of oats with strawberries and cheerios)
- CONTACT SOLUTION (my lord so cheap... even when it was on sale at target i got more for my dollar at costco)
- soy milk (when you're lactose intolerant...)

and no one can beat the 95 cent humongous pretzel... mmmm
 
those MONSTER mushrooms they have...i swear they're genetically engineered..i've never seen anyone sell mushrooms that big

this is a list i wanna see...come on, don't you guys buy anything good besides polish dogs and jeans..

any other good frozen stuff I should try? They used to have awesome tiramasu..but no longer 🙁

hmmm... last time we got some of the frozen shrimp... that has been pretty good. been throwing those in stir frys and fried rice. the bag advertises "50-70 shrimp per pound" and we only use about 15-16 at a time. i had bought the panda potstickers but those tasted so nasty i wound up throwing the bag away.

i'd buy more frozen stuff, but i keep running out of room in the freezer since its shared with so many others in the apt. or else i'd get a huge bag of waffles... and the temptation to buy a cheesecake is overwhelming...

fruit wise we'd also buy bags of apples (gala) and when they had the satsuma mandarins (mmmm) but there would ALWAYS be one or two bad ones in the box, no matter what. i was just there today and i totally forgot to look for strawberries. 🙁
