99 dollar CompUSA 60gb drive = Maxtor DiamondMax Plus for 60 dollars less. What's the catch?

I was in CompUSA today and they have a stack of 60 GB drives for sale at 99.00 each. The label on the side of the box indicates these are Ultra ATA 133 Diamondmax Plus 7200 RPM drives. What's up with that! They are 60 bucks cheaper than the Maxtor box drive that as far as I can tell is the same. Is this really a D740x Maxtor hard drive or something else? The part # on the CompUSA drive is L06060G. I can't find a reference to this drive on Maxtors website. Anyone have any insight into this too good to be true deal??

Could it be a re-furbished or previously used drive?

BTW, the model number L06060G definitely does not correspond to ANY past Maxtor/Quantum IDE drive.

is that part # on the drive it self...or on the comp usa packaging???

sounds like it could be a comp usa number.....??

That looks like a Maxtor number but your right, it doesn't correspond to anything on Maxtor's website.

My guess is that they were made specifically for CompUSA and it wouldn't surprise me if the BIOS recognizes it as a CompUSA drive, similar to HP, IBM, Compaq, etc., having their drives detect as just that regardless of who manufactured it.

If the warranty is the same, I'd bite.

It has a one year warranty. The (corrected) part number is L06J060G is on the box. I haven't purchased one yet so do not know what number is on the actual drive itself. I am all for saving 60 bucks but I don't want to purchase some "b" model drive made by Maxtor to some cheaper/inferior spec for CopmpUSA. Thanks for the help on this guys. I may snag one just to check it out.

$99 got me an 80GB Western Digital drive there during a sale a month or two ago...
You shoulda been around 🙂

Only 5400 RPM, but it was for a storage machine anyway...

The part number is layed out vaguely similarly to the 60GB ball bearing version of the Maxtor D740X.... perhaps that's what it is?
Or perhaps it's an older DiamondMax60 Plus, and theuir selling it cheapy to rid themselves of leftover stock.
You could always email Maxtor directly and inquire about that part #, they should have the info readily available for you.

Let us know what it turns out to be...

This one is an Ultra ATA 133 7200 RPM 2MB buffer Maxtor drive. Can't figure out which one though. The only drive that meets the specs on Maxtor's website is the D740X. I think I'll email Maxtor and see what they say.

<< 1 year warranty and 512KB cache vs standard 2MB. >>

Ouch, I would rather pay a few bucks more for a "real" HDD. 🙂
