Philips DSR7000 DirecTV Tivo 40GB dolby digital receiver and digital recorder for $99 at BestBuy.com with free shipping. No rebate to fool with. In order to use this unit, you must be a new or existing DirecTV customer. This unit will not work unless you have DirecTV.

No, I do not work for directv. I just like to shop and find this.

Is it possible to expand this unit with an additional hard drive? I did that to my original (14 HR Phillips) TiVo, but I've heard that the DirecTiVo units were harder AND newer hardware is harder to expand. Given that it's two strikes against, is it possible to upgrade still? I would love a DirecTiVo. I'm sick of the five-second delay while the IR repeater from the TiVo changes channels on the DirecTV receiver. My old receiver took serial input, so it was very quick. These new boxes I got this time are terrible. Been looking for one of these for a while. Missed out on the Circuit City deal for $50 last week.

Good find!

It's easy, I did one the other day. Took me about 1/2 hour start to finish.

Also check out CC. Direct ship and local stores were sold out last week but all back in stock now.

Yeah - funny, the timing on that - I tried getting one while the $50 rebate was still on, but they were OOS - both at the warehouse and every store within 40 miles (about 6).

Saturday, shortly after midnight (when the rebate expired) , I started getting emails that they were back in stock, first at the warehouse, then store by store. I never knew there were stock people working overnights, on the weekends, at CC stores.

Grr.

Anyway, I go to pick up the Phillips from BB in about 20 minutes - even though I've got customer service horor stories from BB too.

Is this a sale or regular price? I'd like to pick one up, but I'm leaving town in a few days. I'd rather wait until I get back. This is awesome if I can add another HD. (Thanks, iwearnosox.)

What is the best way to get the video out of this and onto a computer at the best possible quality? Is it feasible to hook the Tivo's drive up to a PC and transfer the video somehow?

Yeah. Definitely keep that discussion off this thread or it will be locko and you'll be gone-o.
The TiVo community forum can probably direct you, though details are banned on their site because it's a violation of the user agreement.

Sorry, I wasn't intending to break any forum guidelines with my previous post. I do think that transferring the data to a PC should fall under fair use(Any copyright infrignement would arguably have been done when you made the copy with the Tivo, though most courts would uphold that as fair use also).

I think they're trying to protect themselves from what is possible once the data hits the PC. If it were easy, that would probably open them up to lawsuits. So the video isn't standard MPEG files. They make you work for the prize. . .

Hogwash, talk about extraction all you want. dealdatabase.com is a good place to start, look for tystudio for tivo extraction.

Distributing copyrighted content is a no no but if you're talking about saving recordings for your own purpose then have at it.

What are you going to do with it w/out DTV? It's useless otherwise, no?

I think requiring activation is criminal... It's hardware, some people just want to play with it. But yea, it is very limited. Buy hey, for $100 at least it's a hard drive and board :)

Criminal? Why do you want it if you don't have a subscription or plan to have one? It is a bargain when you already have one directv tivo, you don't pay tivo fee for second, third... units. Otherwise, $100 can buy a bigger harddrive.

So if I'm already a TiVo subscriber on a regular machine, do I still have to pay the $5/mo on this one?

yep. Standalone Tivo service goes through Tivo. DirecTivo Service is billed through DirecTV. The $5 a month for the DirecTivo service is only waived if you subscribe to the Total Choice Premier package.

I want to get this for my gf's dad. If I get it through his subscription, he'll get the exra $5 charge then he would then have to cancel; too much hassle for a person getting a gift =)

any nice dtv subscriber wanna help me out here?

FYI, DirecTV streams as MPEG2, thus the tivo does not need an encoder as it is simply capturing the live feel. Any other service you would be using this device for WOULD require an mpeg encoder, hence the standalong units costing more. Net result, useless box once disconnect from direcTV. Anything you would want to do to play with this unit would be useless as you would have to be running off of DTV to try it.

Also, unit now shows:

Our Price: $99.99
You Save: $6.00

I have also heard that the $5 coupon isnt working for some and is for others, so you may be able to get it below $90

Has anyone bought this yet and implemented it? How does it work if I only have one video feed running to the living room? Am I able to disable the dual tuner functionality or does it automatically assume the second feed is available? My problem is I only have a dual LNB dish and the other feed is running to my bedroom. Even if I could buy another dish, I'll never be able to get the cable run. I had to have someone in the attic of the apartment complex.

Also, I signed up with DirecTV's two-room setup. I pay an extra $5/mo for the second tuner. Are they going to let me disable that one and enable this one? Or charge me for a third tuner?

Thanks. I just got back in to town and have tomorrow off. Hoping to run up and pick one up if it's going to work.
